Catwoman's Futuristic New Costume Revealed | Screen Rant

Warning: Spoilers ahead for Future State: Catwoman #1 from writerRam V. and artist Otto Schmidt.

It is several years into the future and a utilitarian fascist regime by the name of the Magistrate has taken over Gotham City. The Batman the populace know is thought to be dead, and without him fear and turmoil are running more rampant than ever before. But walking amongst the crowds of deeply oppressed people is an ally, another stray to lead the innocent out of the dark. Future State: Catwoman #1 is about to bring readers a dystopian Catwoman, and it looks like she's suiting up.

Selina Kyle is no stranger to hardship and darkness, but what the Magistrate has brought to Gotham is a new level of oppression even she hasn't witnessed. Literature like 1984 and The Hunger Games come to mind when thinking on the current state of the city. It has become a dark dystopia in which freedom, heroism, and peace are but foreign concepts, long since run out of town by a dictatorial regime. But where there is darkness and tyranny there almost always hides an unexpected hero lurking in the shadows, and in this case it seems that hero may just be a vengefully revitalized Selina Kyle.

Not only has Catwoman survived whatever may have taken down the Dark Knight, but she's apparently found a place in the shadows of society, where people are being hunted down by the Magistrate in order to "set straight" the once great city. She's found her place in this new world, and it seems as though she's doing more than just coasting along in the shadows. In the preview DC released for this upcoming issue, it looks like Future State's Selina Kyle will have her own Katniss Everdeen moment - signal, chant, and all. But there's more. Along with her ability to motivate the masses, to bring the "strays" together as one, she's also getting a visual upgrade to match her rebel cause. Slightly similar to the look fans have seen on the future Catwoman from Clay Mann in Batman/Catwoman; Future State Catwoman's new costume seems to blend the best parts of her iconic black suit with the futuristic tech revealed in Tom King's comic. Both aesthetic and technological upgrades are bringing The Cat to a new level of intimidation and prowess. Apparently this new suit is magnetic, perfect for hitching a ride on a train carrying a load of kidnapped civilians and children. It looks like Gotham's not helpless without Batman after all.

The Magistrate would be smart to watch their backs with this cat lurking in the shadows. They seem to underestimate the resilience of the people of Gotham, and the vengeful nature of some of its more... elusive members of society, and it's only a matter of time before that arrogance comes back to bite them. Just because Batman is gone doesn't mean his strongest allies aren't waiting to fight their way out of the darkness.

Just like Katniss Everdeen, a new and improved Future State Catwoman is prepped and ready to take down her oppressors and save the oppressed, all while giving them hope to hold onto in this endless night... only instead of bow, this cat's got claws. All fans can do now is hope they'll be enough to match the Magistrate's might.
