Fan Casting The Movie Version Of Red Dead Redemption 2
Rockstar Games have launched several cinematic video game franchises, Red Dead Redemption easily being one of their most successful. The Western-themed action-adventure games are worthy of a film adaptation, given their turbulent narrative of a self-destructive Western frontier told from an outlaw gang's perspective. Red Dead Redemption 2 would make for a promising first to kick off this hypothetical cinematic franchise, as the game served as a prequel to the original.
Video-game films have mostly been a risky venture, but with the ambitious development of the upcoming The Last Of Us drama series, there seems to be some hope for story-driven masterpieces like Red Dead Redemption 2.
10 Arthur Morgan - Tom Hardy
A veteran of the Van der Linde gang, Arthur Morgan serves as the central character of the game. He's a multi-faceted character, brimming with loyalty, sarcasm, and rage serving as a protege to Dutch Van der Linde.
Tom Hardy's experience with Western/frontier period films began with the lesser-known Lawless and culminated with his Oscar-nominated performance in The Revenant, in which he played the chief antagonist. Be it his physique or his acting range, Tom Hardy seems tailormade for the role of a complex character like Morgan. Roles like Bronson and Bane express dark, twisted senses of humor while setting an atmosphere of fear.
9 Dutch Van Der Linde - Christian Bale
Dutch van der Linde, the leader of the gang christened after him, initially tends to be an idealist with his particular ethics. His hypocrisy can soon be seen when he ends up going against his own ideals. An opportunist, an anti-hero, a cynic, an anarchist, there are many shades to his personality.
Christian Bale fits the description, as he has had a stellar history portraying ambitious yet troubled characters, American Psycho and Vice being a few notable examples. In fact, Bale's usual fuzzy muzzle beard style also seems to resemble van der Linde's facial hair.
8 Hosea Matthews - Clint Eastwood
A new character in the series, Hosea Matthews is a highly practical and intelligent ally to Dutch. As the most senior member of the gang, he's usually seen as a skilled advisor and prefers negotiations over gruesome violence.
The latter part of Clint Eastwood's career has often found him play old-aged characters who are compelled to face a decline in their long-lost glory. Unforgiven, In The Line Of Fire, Gran Torino, and Million Dollar Baby, all bear testimony to these. Even though he mostly directs his own performances now, having him join the Red Dead Redemption ensemble would be a fitting tribute to Eastwood's younger legacy, as he shot to fame as the protagonist in several iconic Westerns.
7 John Marston - Karl Urban
As a bounty hunter, John Marston is an intimidating man with a tragic backstory and is a rugged adventurer who can survive a lot of natural extremes without fear.
His coldhearted, dry sense of existence matches that of Karl Urban, who is a perfect pick for nuanced antiheroes. Just take two cases in favor of this, his appearance as Judge Dredd in Dredd and as Billy Butcher in The Boys. While the former is a more controlled and silent performance, the latter finds Urban saying the show's best one-liners, but both carry a sense of loss and suppressed rage.
6 Abigail Roberts - Rebecca Hall
Rebecca Hall's last major lead performance might be as the troubled news reporter Christine Chubbuck in Christine. However, she has also been quite effective in the ensemble-driven thrillers The Town, The Gift, Professor Marston and the Wonder Women, and so on.
A role like Abigail Roberts might unleash her dramatic prowess as a supporting actress. In both Red Dead Redemption games, Roberts is shown as a strong-willed mother who loves her family dearly. She's also John Martson's love interest, with whom she shares a toxic romance, chiefly due to John's lack of good parenting of their son Jack.
5 Uncle - John C. Reilly
Uncle is an alcoholic who just lazes around, telling his peers tall tales about his glorious past. Serving as slight comic relief, John C. Reilly would be a good pick for the character.
Even though Reilly has had his share of goofy comedies with collaborators like Will Ferell, he also has proven his mettle in dramatic or subtler roles in films, like The Lobster and Magnolia. However, it's his turn as Hank Marlow in Kong: Skull Island that closely matches Uncle's profile. As Marlow, Reilly plays the role of a lieutenant who gets stranded on Skull Island for decades, picking up the ways of the Skull Islanders.
4 Sadie Adler - Vanessa Kirby
Vanessa Kirby is a performer of great dramatic range, as is obvious from character-driven dramas like Pieces of a Woman or The Crown's first two seasons. But Kirby is quite suitable for action roles too, thanks to Hobbs & Shaw, and Mission Impossible: Fallout.
She seems to be perfect for a straightforward, gallant bounty hunter like Sadie Adler who seeks revenge for the murder of her husband.
3 Andrew Milton - Willem Dafoe
Andrew Milton is a classic villain archetype and Willem Dafoe could add his trademark touch of emotive overacting with the Pinkerton Detective Agency agent. While he can easily make audiences love him with his ideal characters, Dafoe has achieved popularity with his darkly troubling drama roles, like The Lighthouse, Shadow of the Vampire, and of course, Spider-Man.
In Sam Raimi's take on Spiderman, Dafoe played the part of Green Goblin/Norman Osborn, giving an unforgettably chilling performance that has garnered a cult following of its own.
2 Charles Smith - Winston Duke
Charles Smith can be a quiet and reserved person, but also a pretty deadly fighter. He, however, has control over his temper and doesn't engage in wanton killing.
Winston Duke feels like a good casting choice for Smith. Audiences have seen his cocky and angry perspective as M'Baku in Black Panther, while his lead role in Us helped him explore a softer and more fearful side to his persona. With a role like Charles Smith, he'll be able to express a blend of both of these mannerisms, while exploring the several moral conflicts that the character faces as a hunter.
1 Angelo Bronte - F. Murray Abraham
Angelo Bronte is a heavily ruthless Italian crimelord and is often disloyal to his business associates. F. Murray Abraham is chiefly known for his role in Amadeus but has actively made his presence felt in several character roles over the years.
Bronte himself isn't a major character in the game but still appears in a few influential scenes. In Amadeus, Abraham added a riveting nuance to his villainous portrayal of Antonio Salieri. As the antagonist in a Red Dead Redemption film, he could make a comeback with a vicious character like "Papa Bronte."
