Godzilla vs Kong Footage Suggests The World Views The Ape As A Savior
New Godzilla vs. Kong footage seems to reveal how humanity looks upon the giant ape. The marketing train for the upcoming MonsterVerse showdown is taking off. In addition to the first poster, snippets of footage have been popping up. One six-second video shows Kong with a new weapon as he leaps toward Godzilla.
One of the biggest questions surrounding Godzilla vs. Kong is the role of the two Titans. In Godzilla and Godzilla: King of the Monsters, the giant reptile is portrayed as an ancient protector. He rises in the 2014 film to combat the MUTOs, and returns five years later to prevent King Ghidorah from terraforming the Earth. Godzilla isn't necessarily protecting humanity, however. His goal is to defend the planet, and he would probably turn against humanity if they posed a threat to it. Meanwhile, Kong serves as a protector of Skull Island. Unlike Godzilla, Kong goes out of his way to protect humans. In Kong: Skull Island, the ape saves Mason from drowning and being eaten by the big Skullcrawler. This difference in portrayals has continued to generate plenty of discussion on why Godzilla and Kong are about to collide. The first trailer goes live tomorrow, and it could answer that vital question.
Continuing to build hype for the trailer, Legendary has released more new Godzilla vs. Kong footage. In the brief clip, a child presents Kong with what looks like a handmade doll shaped like the ape. Check it out below.
Of course, the most notable aspect is a character saying "We need Kong. The world needs him." This could imply humanity—or at least someone—acknowledges the giant ape is needed to save the world. The big question is if the seeming danger is referring to Godzilla. In another released clip, Kong is seen in chains as he interacts with what appears to be a child. It's hard to say how these clips come together in the story, but it appears Kong is being portrayed as a heroic/sympathetic figure based on everything released so far.
In Godzilla: King of the Monsters, Monarch acknowledges only Godzilla can defeat King Ghidorah. After Ghidorah's defeat, one character is thankful Godzilla is on humanity's side, but another replies with a foreboding "For now." Could this signify Godzilla will, in fact, view humanity as a threat to the Earth in Godzilla vs. Kong? Kong would be the only one able to defeat him. However, there's also the toy leak potentially teasing a new antagonist to the MonsterVerse to consider as well. Godzilla vs. Kong could have the most interesting storyline in the MonsterVerse yet.
