Golden Globes 2021 Predictions: 10 Movies Most Likely To Be Nominated For Best Comedy/Musical

Though the last year has been filled with plenty of tears and sleepless nights, there have still been quite a few laughs - thanks to the injection of Hollywood comedies straight into audiences' homes. While the upcoming awards season to honor those films is sure to look different, just as everything has over the last twelve months,  the films are still deserving of recognition. Whether they be famous musicals finally brought to the big screen or the revival of a beloved character, the films that made fans smile were a rare bright spot in 2020.

The first stop on the awards gauntlet is the Golden Globe, and with nominations coming on February 3rd, there are plenty of big names in the hunt for best comedy/musical.

10 Wild Mountain Thyme

While Wild Mountain Thyme hasn't gotten the greatest reviews, this dramedy seems designed for the awards circuit. The late-2020 release about an Irish father who threatens to hand off his farmland to his American nephew instead of his own son sports an all-star lineup of Emily Blunt, James Dornan, Jon Hamm, and Christopher Walken. Though this film is far from the typical "comedy," the Golden Globes have made it a habit of nominating funny dramas in the best comedy category (see The Martian in 2015). This film might fly under the radar and be nominated in the Globes' most flexible category.

9 The Forty-Year-Old Version

Despite winning an award for best director at last year's Sundance, Radha Blank's The Forty-Year-Old Version has become something of a forgotten gem from 2020. This black-and-white comedy about a middle-aged playwright trying to find her footing in the New York City rap game is one of the highest rated Netflix releases of the last year. And yet, it seems that few have seen it.

A Golden Globe nomination, which is certainly in the realm of possibility for this festival favorite, would certainly help build its name recognition, and might just land Radha Blank a few more awards for her shelves.

8 French Exit

Sony Picture Classic's French Exit premiered last year at the New York Film Festival, where it was praised for the performances of Lucas Hedges and Michelle Pfeiffer, who play a once rich mother-son duo who move to Paris on the last of their fortunes. It is set to open theatrically in mid-February, just two weeks before the Golden Globes, but that hasn't derailed any of the buzz around its nomination. If anything, its last-minute release may help the momentum push this zany and surreal comedy to the forefront of contenders.

7 Emma

No one had a better 2020 than Anya Taylor-Joy. From a lead role in Marvel's The New Mutants to helming the most prestigious miniseries in years, The Queen's Gambit, few could match her pace. And yet, one of Anya's least talked about performances from 2020 is as the titular character in Emma. Based on the Jane Austen novel of the same name, this quirky classical-era romcom is the quiet favorite in the race for best costumes and production design. While it made less noise than Anya Taylor-Joy's other projects, it has the best chance of bringing home the biggest awards, including a Golden Globe for best comedy.

6 The Personal History Of David Copperfield

It's been over a year since the English film The Personal History of David Copperfield premiered across the pond, which means the fanfare around it has all but entirely died out. However, this big-budget film based on the Charles Dickens story and starring Dev Patel, Tilda Swinton, and Paul Whitehouse may be able to reignite some of that chatter with a nomination at the Globes.

Much like Emma, this film is a solid contender for best costume and production design, but unlike that romcom, David Copperfield performed much better in its native England. Fans will just have to wait and see if that carries over into a Golden Globes nomination.

5 Hamilton

Four years after filming, Disney+ finally released Hamilton, the most influential musical of the 21st century, to audiences at home. The filmed stage production of the famous "hip-hopera" immediately became the cultural moment of 2020's summer, and that hype hasn't gone anywhere. Though it was announced in early January that Hamilton would not be eligible to compete at the Oscars, it's still eligible at the Golden Globes. This means that one of the most decorated musicals of all time - it already won 11 Tonys, a Grammy, and the Pulitzer - has a shot to add a few more awards to its trophy case.

4 The Prom

Believe it or not, Ryan Murphy - the creative genius behind GleeAmerican Horror Story, and American Crime Story - has never been nominated for a Golden Globe. That may very well change this year. The Murphy-directed musical extravaganza that is The Prom is a frontrunner for best comedy/musical at the Globes. Starring Meryl Streep, James Corden, Keegan Michael-Key, Kerry Washington, and Nicole Kidman, this imperfect musical has been praised as fun, queer, and campy. With such a breakout success on Netflix, it will be hard for the Golden Globes to ignore this loud and proud film, and the man behind it.

3 Borat Subsequent Moviefilm

After a 14-year absence, Sacha Baron Cohen finally revived the infamous Borat for Borat Subsequent Moviefilm - the most talked about movie of 2020. The Borat sequel was able to capture the flailing American zeitgeist, one dangerously divided on politics and science, better than most filmmakers could even dream of. Maria Bakalova, who plays Borat's feral daughter, is already being penciled in as the winner for best supporting actress at the upcoming Academy Awards, if for no other reason than her intense and inappropriate scenes with Rudy Giuliani. Though the film is wild, politically incorrect, and a set-down from the original, it is almost assured a nomination for the top comedy prize.

2 On The Rocks

Once again Sofia Coppola has reunited with Bill Murray, this time for a comedy about a playboy father (Murray) helping his daughter (Rashida Jones) spy on her may-be-cheating husband (Marlon Wayans). This simple and silly Coppola film has all the charm of her past works, with a beautiful NYC backdrop. It didn't make quite the splash that distributor A24 was hoping it would, but it is also the kind of safe bet that the Golden Globes may nominate to avoid any more controversy.

1 Palm Springs

They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, and if that's the case, then Groundhog Day should feel proud. Palm Springs, Hulu's biggest comedy starring Andy Samberg, Cristin Milioti, and J.K. Simmons, has replicated not just Groundhog Day's vision of a time-loop, but its success. After a year where every day felt the same as the last, Palm Springs made that very premise feel fresh and fun again.

The sci-fi comedy is not just teeming with jokes and Easter eggs, it is also filled with heart. Palm Springs is sure to be called for a nomination on February 3rd, and the Golden Globes will be just the beginning. Get ready to hear its name again, and again, and again.
