Gossip Girl: 5 People Dan Could Have Trusted With His Secret (& 5 He Couldn't)
The Dan Humphrey is Gossip Girl reveal will never stop being iconic and almost epochal; the Gossip Girl fandom has weighed in on many theories and created several fan fiction stories surrounding how exactly Dan was able to keep his identity as Gossip Girl a secret for so long.
And even though he had his sister Jenny for help, Gossip Girl’s job description was too exhaustive. To think Dan orchestrated all this damage and managed to write a book and maintain a social life at the same time is unimaginable. And this begs the question, could he have used another ally? Is there someone he would have trusted with his big secret? Here’s a fun exploration of who Dan Humphrey could share his secret with, and who would definitely not be on that list.
10 Could Have Trusted: Rufus
Rufus was perhaps the most shocked and somewhat hurt at Dan’s major reveal. He couldn’t have ever hoped that his son would be the mind behind Gossip Girl’s operations. The big Season 6 reveal shows Rufus to be mildly angry and betrayed, but considering the havoc Gossip Girl has caused in his personal life, Rufus should ideally have been a lot angrier at Dan.
However, he is also one of the very few people Dan could have trusted with this secret; not only would he have helped Dan strategize better since they both share the same class values, but Rufus would have also kept Dan grounded when his vicious side got the better of him.
9 Could Not Have Trusted: Serena
It needs to be acknowledged that Serena is really bad at keeping secrets. Plus, Serena's also Gossip Girl’s biggest victim; the fact that Gossip Girl was conceptualized with Serena as the center of attention plays a crucial role here. Dan could never have told Serena that he was Gossip Girl because it would mean admitting how creepy and unprovoked his attacks against her were.
And though Serena makes peace with this truth in the final season, chances are she would have severed ties with him when she was younger. And she would have obviously told everyone about it.
8 Could Have Trusted: Nate
Despite their differences, Nate and Dan agree on a lot of things, and Nate is possibly the only person who could keep a secret this big. Nate has experienced first hand how Gossip Girl has maneuvered over the years and has also attempted to control the site himself.
So, he obviously understands how powerful the platform was; if Dan confided in Nate, especially after he took over the reins at Spectator, the two would be an unstoppable force. Nate would obviously have access to a lot of information and of course, he could never have revealed to people that Dan was Gossip Girl.
7 Could Not Have Trusted: Chuck
One of Chuck’s biggest flaws is his impulsiveness; he is triggered very easily even when remotely challenged, so in spite of having a thick skin he tends to flip out when someone demands accountability from him. If he was more reliable as a friend and an ally, Dan could have definitely shared his secret with him.
Not only is Chuck one of the most powerful men in New York but he also wields a lot of influence in certain circles. If they joined hands, Gossip Girl could earn a lot more credibility. But Chuck would probably bail on Dan the minute he senses that the platform is doing him any disservice, and that would potentially ruin Dan’s plans.
6 Could Have Trusted: Lily
This may sound controversial considering Lily’s daughter Serena has been bullied consistently by Gossip Girl, but Lily is really shrewd and calculative. Not only would she have helped Dan keep his secret but would have also helped him bring down more people.
However, Gossip Girl may have needed to tone down on the Serena bashing, which would have changed things considerably. But letting Lily in on the secret would also give her a lot of power since she would often weaponize Gossip Girl’s reach for her own agendas, but Lily would never go as far as to put Dan in trouble or abandon his interests.
5 Could Not Have Trusted: Blair
Blair is perhaps the worst person Dan could have revealed his secret to; unlike some of her peers, Blair isn’t far-sighted, her agendas and self-serving social maneuvers are only designed for short-term gains - unless she gets very lucky. If she did find out that Dan is Gossip Girl, she would have made his life miserable and would have obviously wanted to overtake the platform, or at least join in.
And someone as power-hungry as Blair would have either ruined the platform altogether or she would have revealed Dan’s secret to everyone quite unceremoniously.
4 Could Have Trusted: Vanessa
Dan And Vanessa share many of the same angsts, and despite the fact that Dan broke her heart, Vanessa could have proven to be a formidable ally. Clearly, she gets how the Upper East Side works and since she has never wanted to fit in like Dan has, she’s a lot more clear-sighted and logical about the people around her.
She could have helped Dan in multiple ways if he would have confided in her. Plus, she’s also grounded enough to understand how sensitive this information is and what led Dan to start Gossip Girl in the first place.
3 Could Not Have Trusted: Georgina
Just because Georgina is a powerful ally doesn’t mean she’s a good one; Georgina is entirely consumed by her petty vengeance and wants to see people suffer. Dan, as Gossip Girl was above most mindless jealousies and competitions; just because he knew and understood every personal dynamic didn't mean he was invested in them.
He simply enjoyed creating tensions and he let the chips fall where they may. But Georgina would be totally out of control if she knew Dan was Gossip Girl; not only would she have tried to use the platform for her own agendas but would have probably traded the secret away in exchange for some small social victory.
2 Could Have Trusted: Dorota
Dorota has proved how useful she could be as a confidante and friend, and not to mention she’s a terrific secret keeper, so much so that fans had assumed that Dorota was the real Gossip Girl.
She could only have helped Dan out in his quest; she’s part of the Waldorf household where Serena was also living for a while so she would know a lot about Blair and Serena’s personal life. Plus, Dan needed an ally who’s not influential in the traditional sense and who doesn’t always think of furthering their own agendas.
1 Could Not Have Trusted: Ivy
Ivy is really unreliable and she has proved that she’s ready to go to any lengths to make it big in the Upper East Side. She also dated Dan’s dad Rufus for a while, so chances are telling Ivy his secret could be superbly risky for Dan.
Not only would she have blackmailed him or have leveraged this information for her own benefit, but she would have also tried to influence him or even hijack the platform to get back at someone.
