Mega Man Images Reveal Never-Before Seen Look At Cancelled 90s Show

Some never-seen-before images of a canceled Mega Man TV series from the 1990s have been unearthed, providing fans with a glimpse of what could have been. The famed video game protagonist has been a favorite of many gamers for decades, with the first game in the series, Mega Man, arriving in 1987.

The first Mega Man game's success paved the way for a massive number of sequels and spin-offs, with the most recent entry in the original series released as recently as 2018. The series's basic story dealt with robot engineer Dr. Thomas Light and his robot children, Mega Man and Roll. Together they battle the evil Dr. Albert W. Wily, who strives to conquer the world with his robot army. Though the series has achieved an elevated status that few video games will ever reach, Mega Man hasn’t had as much success as a TV series. To date, there have been several different iterations of the game as an animated TV series, with the most successful titles made for a Japanese audience.

Now thanks to Mega Man super fan and Twitter user @Protodude, fans have a chance to take a look at some abandoned concept imagery for a proposed Mega Man TV series. The images came from the 1990s when a Mega Man anime was prepped for production. Unfortunately for fans, the series never got off the ground, meaning that today these images are likely all that remains of what could have been:

Given its immense ongoing popularity, it’s strange that Mega Man still hasn’t been made into a feature film. Paranormal Activity 3 & 4 directors Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman were attached as directors on a Mega Man movie. Still, it’s been four years since Joost and Schulman’s involvement was first announced. Netflix has reportedly now acquired the project, but very little remains publicly known at this time. Nonetheless, fans are undoubtedly eager to see at least some sign that production is moving along.

For Mega Man fans, these images from an abandoned TV series are a pretty great way to see yet another interpretation of the game in a different medium. And while it’s unfortunate that the series didn’t end up making its way into production, there’s still plenty of other options for those who want to watch Mega Man take on the evil Dr. Wily. Hopefully, the Mega Man feature film will move closer to completion in 2021 – or at the very least offer fans, some hope that the beloved video game star will be heading to the big screen soon.
