An MCU Villain Just Gave Wonder Woman A Special Shoutout

Warning: contains spoilers for King in Black: Thunderbolts #2!

As the two biggest names in the comic book industry, Marvel and DC have found plenty of ways to poke fun at one another over the years. The competitors have referenced one another’s works countless times in their own stories, making sure to do so in ways that won’t cost them in legal fees. This often results in some hilarious, not-so-subtle shoutouts, which is exactly what Wonder Woman just received from an MCU villain.

Marvel’s King in Black event has brought many unlikely heroes and villains into the fight against Knull, the God of the Symbiotes. While teams like the Avengers, the X-Men, and the Fantastic Four have all made their expected appearances, one surprising team to join the fray is the Thunderbolts. Consisting of various villains, the team is fairly reminiscent of DC’s Suicide Squad, with Kingpin, aka Wilson Fisk, calling the shots from behind the scenes. In their first issue alone, the team lost half of its members as the villains made their way to the Ravencroft Institute to meet up with Norman Osborn. Even with dwindling numbers, however, the villains are still managing to banter with one another, with one almost accidentally name-dropping one of DC’s greatest heroes.

As Taskmaster, Star, Mister Fear, and the forgotten MCU villain Batroc meet with Norman Osborn in King in Black: Thunderbolts #2 by Matthew Rosenberg and Juan Ferreyra, Ravencroft’s roof gets destroyed by one of Knull’s symbiote dragons. While the Thunderbolts don’t take any damage, some of the institute’s inmates are overtaken by symbiotes. As the team stands ready to fight off Knull’s newest minions, Taskmaster tells his allies to put their masks on, despite Kingpin’s orders to keep them off in the prior issue. Star refuses, claiming that she doesn’t want to anger Fisk, to which Batroc replies, “Remember, Fisk told us real heroes do not hide their faces, madame. You will be like the Wonder Man, non?” When this comparison confuses Star, Batroc goes on further to explain how Wonder Man is incredibly famous in France.

After a brief fight, the team escapes Ravencroft in a bus with a few rescued inmates to continue on with their mission. Due to some squabbling, however, Mister Fear ends up driving the vehicle off of a bridge. Luckily, they have a powerhouse on the team, as Star manages to catch the falling bus and fly it to the other side of the bridge. Depleted of energy after this display of strength, Star takes a moment to catch her breath, as Batroc approaches to build off of his earlier conversation. He cheers, “Bravo, madame. See? You are already acting like the Wonder Man. But a woman… Wonder Lady.” Despite the Leaper’s praise, however, Taskmaster is more interested in moving on with the mission and he quickly commands the team to continue ahead.

Even if Batroc doesn’t say it explicitly, it’s pretty clear that this is a reference to Wonder Woman. After all, he does basically call her the woman-version of Wonder Man. Given that the name Wonder Girl is taken by DC Comics as well, Wonder Lady is one of the few options Star has left if she's going to take Batroc’s nicknaming advice, at least if she wants to avoid a lawsuit like Deadpool did, that is. Although, with the King in Black around, a lawsuit is probably the least of her concerns. King in Black: Thunderbolts #2 from Marvel Comics is available in stores now.
