Best Nintendo Switch Horror Games | Screen Rant
The Nintendo Switch has plenty of games starring Mario and Link, but the hybrid console's game selection has expanded far past Nintendo's classic franchises. Since its release in 2017, publishers have steadily ported many games from other platforms onto the Switch, including some particularly spine-chilling ones. Most of the Nintendo Switch's best horror games make Luigi's Mansion 3 seem like a walk in the park.
Scary games might not fit in with Nintendo's traditionally family-friendly product strategy, but the company has allowed a wide variety of titles to be playable on Switch. More mature releases, like The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim, have made it onto the platform throughout the years. Along the way, blood-curdling horror games have also become available on the Switch eShop.
There's no shortage of spooky games on the console, with classic franchises like Capcom's Resident Evil receiving Switch ports, but there are a handful of titles that can even put the Umbrella Corporation's army of zombie mutants to shame. Here are the scariest horror games available on the Nintendo Switch.
Outlast: Bundle of Terror remains one of the premier survival horror releases to date, and it was added to the Switch eShop in 2018. Developer Red Barrels put players in the shoes of investigative journalists Blake and Lynn Langermann, who chase a story by exploring a decrepit asylum. The husband-and-wife duo are only armed with a camera, rendering them unable to defend themselves when they stumble upon trouble. Their only option is to hightail it out of sticky situations. Outlast's defenseless protagonists, creepy environments, and hair-raising enemies come together to create a horror experience rivaled by few other franchises.
One of those franchises is Frictional Games' Amnesia. 201o's Amnesia: The Dark Descent, a petrifying puzzle adventure, is credited with refining the survival horror formula. The Dark Descent's story told from the perspective of a man named Daniel, who awakens in the abandoned halls of a castle with no memory of himself or how he got there. Players are tasked with unlocking the mysteries of the palace Daniel finds himself in, staying close to sources of light at the risk slipping into a fear-induced hysteria. Amnesia: Collection, which includes two games and an expansion, is available now on Switch.
The predecessor to the recently released Little Nightmare 2, Bandai Namco's horror-themed puzzle-platformer Little Nightmares still holds up. The title is reminiscent of the type of feel-good platforming gamers might expect a Nintendo system, but with a sinister twist: Players control a little girl named Six as she tries to escape the Maw, a submersible vessel inhabited by horrifying creatures. Little Nightmares' characters look like possessed dolls, its environments are consistently frightening, and it has an eerie soundtrack to tie it all together. It's a horror game that seems like it was made specifically for the Nintendo Switch.
