Classic Star Wars Shooter Republic Commando Leaked For Switch
Star Wars: Republic Commando is reportedly making a return and this time, it'll be on Nintendo Switch. This will mark the first time the shooter has been on another platform outside of Xbox consoles and PC if the leak proves to be true.
Star Wars: Republic Commando was a darker and grittier look into the Star Wars universe that was released just prior to Revenge of the Sith in 2005. The game sets up some of the events seen in George Lucas' film, such as the Battle of Kashyyyk. The game had a pretty abrupt ending, seemingly just teeing up the last act of Revenge of the Sith, but a sequel was planned. It never released and hopes for a sequel have dwindled over the years following EA's exclusive reign on the franchise.
With news that Lucasfilm will be allowing new developers to explore the franchise, starting with Ubisoft, all hope may not be lost. A new leaked port of Star Wars: Republic Commando could also be what's needed to reignite the fire for the series. Nintendo Everything has reported that a port of the FPS leaked on Nintendo servers, likely meaning the game is gearing up for an official release on the console soon. The port is allegedly being developed by Aspyr Media, who has re-released several other classic Star Wars titles and will also be doing new versions of Knights of the Old Republic.
Aspyr Media seems to be doing a lot of work to allow new generations to play some of these classic Star Wars games that have otherwise been stuck on old consoles. It's unclear if this potential port of Star Wars: Republic Commando will come to PlayStation and Xbox as well or if it'll remain exclusive to Nintendo Switch. Republic Commando is currently available on Xbox via backward compatibility but this new version would likely add some slight improvements as well as achievements/trophies. The game also has a multiplayer mode but it's unknown if that'll make it into this new re-release.
Aspyr Media is also working through other Disney-owned IP. It recently leaked that cult-classic Stubbs the Zombie would make a reemergence in March. The developer behind the game shut down a while ago and the rights to its titles, such as Stubbs, reverted to the Mouse. With Aspyr hard at work on a number of ports, it's not hard to imagine that fans will get to see even more classics in addition to Star Wars: Republic Commando in the coming months.
