Emma Watson Retires From Acting & Fans On Twitter Are Not Okay
It's been quite a week for pop culture. First popular electronica duo Daft Punk announces their retirement after 30 years, and now Harry Potter star, philanthropist, book club admin, UN Goodwill ambassador and all-around icon, Emma Watson, has reportedly retired from acting. Her agent recently confirmed that Watson's career is "dormant" right now and she is not accepting any new acting jobs.
It has also been reported that Watson is simply looking to spend more time with her fiance, Leo Robinton, and focus on her personal life. And though retirement may be too strong a word, since it has not been used by her reps, her fans on Twitter are not dealing well with the news of Watson stepping away from the big screen.
8 Nope Nope Nope
It's possible that some fans are simply not okay with the retirement and have not made their peace with it because it sounds so final and unchangeable. Technically, Watson's agent never uttered the word retirement and simply revealed that she's not accepting any acting gigs right now and many actors over the years, have in fact, taken short breaks from their film careers to focus on their personal lives.
But some fans are clearly reacting really badly to this news because this fan made a collage of some of the saddest and shocking cinematic moments portrayed by Watson.
7 Live Long And Prosper
While most Watson-ians are in shambles, some fans seem to be making peace with the possibility that the actor may indeed not be coming back to screen anytime soon, or at all, and she has simply shifted priorities for the time being. However, this fan sympathized with Watson's decision and wished her well for whatever future or career she chooses to pursue.
She named some of Watson's most memorable performances and also hoped to see her make a comeback on the big screen someday.
6 The Teary Moment
For her fans, this could be an especially bad time for an Emma Watson movie marathon because it will only remind them how much Hollywood will lose out on if the Harry Potter star stops her acting run.
This fan, for instance, had to pause to take a breather and process the news of her retirement with some chicken nuggets in the middle of Little Women, which has Watson playing the fan-favorite Meg March, who wasn't just resilient and earthy, but also one of the best characters in the film.
5 This Very Apt Meme
Emma Watson is probably a big favorite with Captain Holt from Brooklyn Nine Nine. One could easily imagine Holt and his husband Kevin hosting an Emma Watson movie night featuring some of her period pieces. So, this Holt meme is very apt in this scenario, especially because Holt is not too great at dealing with bad news.
He either freezes everyone out or enters a ballistic phase, and this fan was probably feeling the same anxiety when news of Watson's retirement came out.
4 Queen Of Transformation
Emma Watson had also undergone tremendous evolution as an actor since she started out with Harry Potter. The fact that she has only taken on roles that challenged her on a certain level made her a huge favorite with cinephiles.
This fan, for instance, marks how much range Watson has and how she has evolved as a performer. "Leaving acting or continuing is personal decision and to be respected... But celebrating the impact of the roles.. is only we can do [sic]," he writes.
3 Emma's Best
Some fans may simply be in denial over the news of her retirement and are only celebrating Watson's most significant roles instead of mourning the end of her career. This fan, for example, is quite peeved that most fans are not including The Bling Ring when they are rounding up Watson's greatest hits.
The Sofia Coppola film followed a group of sophomores who broke into celebrity homes to rob them and they succeeded in stealing millions of dollars worth of jewelry and collectibles.
2 Role Model Material
For many young girls, Hermione Granger was the perfect role model. She had gumption and faith in her own potential and her no-nonsense demeanor was incredibly empowering.
Much like The Queen's Gambit star Anya Taylor-Joy admitted to having learned English with the help of Harry Potter, this fan, who's not a native English speaker, was also so inspired by Watson's breakout role of Hermione Granger that she started learning English.
1 Are You Okay?
Millions of people around the world may be echoing this fan's sentiments, if not on social media, then in real-life. One of the most shocking aspects about Watson's retirement news is, of course, the fact that her career was just taking off and she proved that she can both carry solo protagonist roles and ensemble costume dramas with equal prowess.
So the fact that her agent admitted that her career is "dormant" right now is understandably not sitting too well with fans. However, this doesn't mean that Watson will stop her activism or her book club.
