Every Streaming Service, Ranked By Number Of Golden Globe Nominations

Nominations for the 78th annual Golden Globe Awards have been announced, and the ceremony is set to commence on February 28th. This year, streaming services reigned supreme, hauling in a vast majority of the award's nominations. And this makes sense. Throughout the last decade, streaming TV series have become known as some of the best in television. And with the COVID-19 pandemic, movies that were set to premiere in theaters found their way to streaming services.

This gave the streaming platforms a massive edge in this year's awards. Noticeably absent, however, were the platforms Peacock and CBS All Access, which failed to pull in even a single nomination. Here are the six streaming services that received nominations...

6 Apple TV+ - 4 Nominations

At last year's awards, Apple made waves with its giant drama, The Morning Show. However, because of the COVID-19 pandemic, production on season 2 was postponed. This created a massive problem for the platform that has a sparse collection of new programming. Apple TV+ wound up reimbursing subscribers, hoping to keep their numbers up, and a recent study even revealed that only 38% of subscribers are actually paying for Apple TV+. Luckily, breakout hits like Ted Lasso and On the Rocks helped the streaming service grab some Golden Globe nominations, providing some much-needed prestige to the platform.

5 HBO Max - 5 Nominations

While HBO was able to snag a good amount of nominations, original programming on HBO Max went mostly unnoticed. Fortunately, the platform's cult-favorite series The Flight Attendant had a big win at the Golden Globes, being nominated for Best Television Series, and star Kaley Cuoco was even nominated for Best Actress.

It's also reasonable that HBO Max didn't receive many nominations. The platform didn't even launch until the final days of May, giving every other platform a five-month lead. On top of that, with the announcement that Warner Brothers will launch all their films side-by-side in theaters and on HBO Max, the platform is bound to gain more popularity in 2021. High-profile films premiering on the streaming service this year include Godzilla vs. Kong and Dune.

4 Disney+ - 6 Nominations

Disney+ had a great (and a not-so-great) year. On the plus side, Disney's streaming platform gained a massive amount of subscribers, nearing almost 100 million in just one year. On the downside, the platform was also riddled with controversy...and then the COVID-19 pandemic hit. The production of the Lizzie McGuire reboot was canceled, the new series WandaVision was pushed back a few months, and shows like Love, Victor was moved to Hulu, sparking outrage.

This left the platform without much content for 2020, which could help explain its lack of award nominations. Even more surprising is that the megahit series The Mandalorian only received one nomination. Most of Disney's six noms came thanks to their animated film Soul and recorded version of the Broadway musical Hamilton.

3 Amazon Prime - 10 Nominations

It's no surprise that the three legacy streaming services would take the top three spots for the nominations. The other platforms were too new, and the pandemic caused them to fall behind in creating content. Amazon Prime, however, which launched its first original series back in 2013, had a string of hits that received ample amounts of attention this year.

Most notable is their film, One Night in Miami, which is nominated for Best Director, Best Supporting Actor, and Best Original Song. The film is based on a true story, when, in 1964, Malcolm X, Muhammad Ali, Jim Brown, and Sam Cooke all spent a night together in Miami, Florida. Surprisingly, Amazon also struck gold with their Borat sequel, which also received three nominations.

2 Hulu - 12 Nominations

Hulu, which is now owned by Disney, has always been known for producing hit series. In the past, Hulu shows like The Act, The Handmaids Tale, and Catch 22 have all had their fair share of Golden Globe noms. But this year, many of Hulu's nominations come from their original films.

Leading the charge with three nominations is the Andy Samberg comedy Palm Springs, which has received universal praise. In fact, the film holds a 94% on Rotten Tomatoes. As both a producer and star of the movie, there's a chance that Samberg could even leave the ceremony with two awards in-hand. Hulu also had a few surprise nominations for its upcoming biopic, The United States Vs. Billie Holiday, with singer Andra Day receiving a Best Actress nom for her portrayal of the famed Jazz musician.

1 Netflix - 42 Nominations

No other streaming platform even came close to matching the whopping 42 nominations Netflix received. And to be fair, Netflix had quite an amazing year. From guilty pleasures like Emily in Paris and Bridgerton to unexpected hits like The Queen's Gambit...Netflix has been the center of pop culture for the entire year.

Many of Netflix's nominees each received multiple nominations. In fact, thanks to shows like Ozark, The Crown, and Ratched, Netflix holds 4 of the 5 spots in the Best Actress - Drama category. Netflix original movies like Mank and The Trial of the Chicago 7  also dominate the film categories, giving the platform a massive edge over its competition. Come February 28th, expect Netflix to be the night's true winner.
