Jodie Foster Recalls Her Favorite Memory of Filming Silence of the Lambs
As the 30th anniversary of The Silence of the Lambs approaches, Jodie Foster shares a favorite memory while filming the psychological horror film. Foster has had a long and successful career, starting as a child actor in Martin Scorsese's Taxi Driver, for which she received her first Academy Award nomination. However, she will always be known as FBI agent Clarice Starling in Jonathan Demme's The Silence of the Lambs. The role garnered Foster her second Academy Award for Best Actress, winning her first for The Accused.
The Silence of the Lambs is based on Thomas Harris's novel of the same name and became an instantaneous hit with audiences and critics. The film became the first horror film to win the Academy Award for Best Picture and one of the very few to win the Big Five, with Best Actress for Foster, Best Actor for Anthony Hopkins, Best Director for Demme, and Best Adapted Screenplay for Ted Tally. The thriller has generated a sequel and an NBC television series named Hannibal and two prequels Red Dragon and Hannibal Rising.
Interestingly enough, what Foster remembers the most about doing The Silence of the Lambs had nothing to do with the film's actual production. In an interview with CinemaBlend's Eric Eisenberg, Foster talks about her most memorable moment during the movie's shooting, which happens to be a Super Bowl party, with her dancing to songs on a boombox and snow falling outside. Foster's full comment can be read below:
"I think my most memorable moment was the Super Bowl party that we had while we were shooting, which wasn’t really a party. It was just me and a boombox in my house, with a lot of people dropping by, and me hitting ‘play’ when I want to go to the next song, and dancing, and it was snowing outside in Pittsburgh. And it's just, you know, those are the highlights that I remember from making films."
Foster's fun, enjoyable moments when the cameras are not rolling are an excellent counterbalance to the character she portrays in the movie. Her performance in the film is considered one of the most outstanding film performances. Foster combines her character's terror and determination to give a compelling interpretation of a young FBI agent set on proving her worth.
Unlike her co-star Hopkins, Foster has not portrayed her iconic character since. Still, even after three decades, The Silence of the Lambs continues to be widely discussed, with an upcoming CBS series titled Clarice to debut in February, set a year after the film's events with Rebecca Breeds portraying the titular character. Perhaps Breeds may take a page from Foster's book on playing a dark, traumatic character.
