Lady Gaga's American Horror Story: Roanoke Witch Villain Explained

Who was Lady Gaga’s American Horror Story: Roanoke character Scáthach? Singer and actress Lady Gaga first appeared in American Horror Story’s fifth season (AKA AHS: Hotel) playing the part of Elizabeth Johnson, the century-old vampiric owner of Hotel Cortez who was trapped in a loveless marriage to serial killer James Patrick March (Evan Peters). Though her performance as the bloodsucking vixen received mixed reviews, Lady Gaga nevertheless earned a Best Actress Golden Globe Award for her troubles.

Lady Gaga returned for the show’s sixth season American Horror Story: Roanoke, playing the villainous witch Scáthach. Set in North Carolina, Roanoke focuses on a haunted farmhouse bought by married couple Matt (André Holland) and Shelby (Lily Rabe), who experience a series of terrifying paranormal run-ins with the vengeful ghosts of the settlers of the Roanoke Colony who mysteriously disappeared in the late 16th century. Scáthach seemed to be in league with the Roanoke ghosts, participating in their ritual sacrifices, although her backstory wouldn’t be revealed until midway through the season.

In “Chapter 4” of American Horror Story: Roanoke, Scáthach revealed her history through a series of flashbacks. An English witch of Druid and ancient Roman descent, Scáthach made her way to the New World as a stowaway on a ship. The ship was plagued with misfortune, resulting in the death of many men, and when Scáthach was discovered upon arrival in America she was blamed and sentenced to burn at the stake. Luckily for Scáthach, she was able to summon the powers of both her ancient Gods and those of the New World and massacred her captors, fleeing into the wilds shortly after.

Sometime later, Scáthach came across the exiled former leader of the Roanoke colony Thomasin White (Kathy Bates), and saved her from being killed by a wild boar in exchange for her soul. Eventually Scáthach came to control the colony via Thomasin and gained their souls when Thomasin massacred them. According to American Horror Story co-creator Ryan Murphy, Scáthach’s legacy runs deeper than just season six too. Apparently, Scáthach is the first-ever Supreme Witch and is therefore connected to other AHS characters and fellow Supremes including Coven’s Fiona Goode (Jessica Lange) and Cordelia Goode (Sarah Paulson).

If Ryan Murphy has his way, Lady Gaga’s Scáthach could appear in future American Horror Story seasons too. Murphy has gone on record saying he plans to revisit Lady Gaga’s American Horror Story: Roanoke character, and with season 10 already in the works – plus the further three seasons that were recently ordered – it might not be too long until fans see Scáthach again.
