Raya & The Last Dragon Super Bowl Trailer Reveals Disney's Fantasy World

A new Raya & the Last Dragon trailer for Walt Disney Animation Studios’ upcoming film has been released, showing off the movie’s rich fantasy world. The film was written by Qui Nguyen Adele Lim, with Kelly Marie Tran and Awkwafina starring as Raya and the Last Dragon, respectively. Raya & the Last Dragon is set to premiere on March 5 in theaters and on Disney+, where it will be available to view for a $29.99 Premier Access fee.

Raya & the Last Dragon is Walt Disney Animation Studios’ 59th film. The story follows Raya, a warrior in the mythical fantasy world of Kumandra. When ancient monsters from Kumandra’s past return to wreak havoc on the world, Raya goes on a journey to find the last surviving dragon and save her people. The film features a stellar voice cast of Asian-American stars, including Sandra Oh, Gemma Chan, Benedict Wong, and Daniel Dae Kim.

The new Raya & the Last Dragon trailer from Disney, debuted during Super Bowl LV, shows Raya and her stalwart animal companion Tuk Tuk (a giant pillbug/armadillo hybrid voiced by Alan Tudyk) embarking on their epic quest to save Kumandra from the forces of evil. Disney’s animation is as gorgeous as ever, and the trailer shows off the beautifully detailed world fans can look forward to exploring in March. There’s plenty of family-friendly action, adventure, and more glimpses at the mythical realms of Kumandra. Watch below.

The new trailer hints further at the divided state of Kumandra. What’s been released so far has alluded that the world was strong and united centuries ago, but that different regions and tribes have grown apart in the wake of the dragons’ vanishing. Raya’s quest will not only be to help the Dragon defeat the evil Druun (the returning monsters), but also to bring balance and healing to the various nations of the world.

It shouldn’t be a surprise that Raya & the Last Dragon has drawn The Legend of Korra and Avatar: The Last Airbender comparisons. Kumandra’s inspiration in different East Asian folklore and mythologies, the quest to unite a divided world, and even the art style of Raya all share some common ground with the world of Avatar. With so many Disney Animation Studios and Pixar films being adapted for original series on Disney+, Raya could even get a show of her own down the line, depending on the movie’s reception. Raya & the Last Dragon premieres on March 5, in theaters and on Disney+ Premier Access.
