Scarlet Witch's WandaVision Powers Teased A Big Magneto Daughter Retcon

WandaVision tapped into the X-Men universe by seemingly introducing Evan Peters' version of Quicksilver - but it also subtly referenced Scarlet Witch's connection to Magneto from the comics. Despite her best efforts, Wanda Maximoff's sitcom bliss was increasingly infringed upon in episode 5. Emails leaked in from the outside, further guiding Vision towards the full horrifying truth behind Westview. Even more dramatically, S.W.O.R.D. Director Tyler Hayward hijacked attempts made by Monica Rambeau to communicate with Wanda. Though Monica meant no immediate harm, Hayward ordered a drone strike on the wayward Avenger in the presence of her newly created twin children, Tommy and Billy.

Predictably, the attack had far from the desired effect. To the sound of alarms blaring, Wanda willingly breached the hex-barrier around Westview and confronted S.W.O.R.D. directly. Dragging the now-wrecked drone behind her, Wanda was back in her Avengers costume and reverted to her Sokovian accident. Despite the squadron of guns pointed at her, the soon-to-be-designated Scarlet Witch maintained full control — as much outside of Westview as inside. "This will be your only warning," she menacingly offered. "Stay out of my home. You don't bother me, I won't bother you." Wanda refused to acknowledge further negotiations, stating she already had everything she wanted. Soon after, she turned to venture back into her new reality. With a flourish of her hand (that would impress both Jimmy Woo and Vision's magic show persona), however, Wanda hexed every soldier to point their guns at Hayward as she went.

It was a testament to Wanda's power and it will no doubt linger in the memory of viewers for quite some time, alongside her almost taking out Thanos singlehandedly in Avengers: Endgame. What made it all the more special, however, was just how closely it matched the actions of another well-known Marvel figure: Magneto. Like Erik Lehnsherr, Wanda has increasingly blurred the line between sympathetic and villainous. Her dismissive tone towards guns and seizure of control over them also reflected a similar move from Magneto in the first X-Men movie. As if that wasn't enough, the way she turned and gestured her hand was almost exactly the same as movements demonstrated by Michael Fassbender's younger Magneto. A viral compilation of the parallels has already emerged in gif form, created by Twitter user ItsJustAnx, and can be seen below:

Looking deeper into the episode, other parallels could be drawn between the pair. Though Wanda's halting of the drone missile occurred off-screen, it didn't change the fact that it happened. As such, she mirrored Magneto's own stopping of similar artillery in X-Men: First Class. Even the fact that WandaVision has moved through the decades with each episode could be seen as reflective of the format exhibited by the X-Men movie franchise. Given the show's attention to every minute detail - as well as Olsen's commitment to every aspect of her performance - it's likely no coincidence. Between all of that and the introduction of Peters' Quicksilver to Westview, WandaVision episode 5 made the show seem even more like a love letter to the X-Men universe.

Of course, that may be the extent of the parallels - subtle Easter eggs to engage the most observant of fans. However, one of the most famous retcons in Marvel Comics history was that of Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch's parentage. Initially the children of Django and Marya Maximoff, it was later revealed that they were actually adopted and that Magneto was their biological father. That retcon has since been retconned again; Wanda and Pietro were unveiled as creations of the High Evolutionary and simply manipulated to think Magneto was their dad. Regardless, there's no telling which comic book story Marvel Studios could choose to pull from. As such, these details lend credence to the idea that the MCU may revise Scarlet Witch's origin to be mutant in nature. Equally, it will no doubt leave fans leaning further into the theory that one version of Magneto or another may show up by WandaVision's end.
