Sex And The City: Carrie's 10 Best Pairs Of Shoes, Ranked (& What They Cost Today)
"I will literally be the old woman who lived in her shoes!" bemoaned Carrie Bradshaw in the Sex And The City episode when she realized she couldn't afford to buy her apartment back from Aiden because the writer had no money. She did, however, have a $40,000 designer shoe collection. As Trey might say: Well, alrighty.
But one must admit, Carrie's footwear game was second to none: Blahniks, Choos, and Louboutins--oh, my. "The higher the better," was her motto, even when she fell off her heels and face planted onto the catwalk where Heidi Klum stepped over her. Regardless, there wasn't--and still isn't--anyone who wouldn't want to walk a mile in this chic New Yorker's shoes. But, if these hooves were expensive back in 2007, imagine what they cost now.
10 Red Hot
You know you've got the coolest shoes when muggers want to steal them along with your purse. “Please, sir, they’re my favorite pair!” Carrie pleaded as she was forced at gunpoint to unbuckle the ankle straps of her Manolo Blahnik Chaos Sandals, which will ring up at the register for $725 and are also available in suede.
The damsel in distress heads to the nearest store, calls 911, as well as Miranda, who brings moral support and a pair of basic shoes for her pal to wear home. From Carrie's wince, it's clear she'd rather go barefoot. The writer may have lost her heels, but Miranda gained a police detective boyfriend.
9 Bootie Call
What's black and white and red all over? Carrie, in a bright top, cropped black jacket, and proving she never met a tutu of any length that she didn't like, a flouncy, multi-tiered skirt, which has only one flaw: it has the potential to cover the columnist's Chanel two-tone booties, which are no longer available retail.
They once sold for $1000, but now make a rare appearance on sites like The Real Real, etc. If one is lucky enough to snag a pair, follow Carrie’s cue and use any excuse to take the stairs so there’s a reason to hike up the skirt and show off the heeled Cocos.
8 Fight For Your Right To Shoe
These Christian Dior Gladiator sandals were worn in the first SATC movie back in 2008. Only Mrs. Preston would pair such a bold, heavy, and dark-colored shoe with a delicate white dress with gold trim and large floral adornment. (The less adventurous among us probably would have chosen a dainty, strappy gold sandal.)
When this style retailed, it did so for $755. Now it's available on the secondary market for what sellers can get, which is around $250. It also seems to come in bronze.
7 Say My Name: Mary Jane
It was the day that Carrie Bradshaw had a fashion epiphany. While exploring the Vogue accessories closet, the writer declared in disbelief: "Manolo Blahnik Mary Janes. I thought these were an urban shoe myth." Still currently retailing to the tune of $745, this style was a way for Mr. Blahnik to get back to basics after going through a baroque period.
Carrie wasn't supposed to be in the closet anyway, let alone try on the merchandise--but she squeezed her feet into the dream come true heels. Were they worth seeing Julian in his briefs and knee-high socks, though?
6 Earn Your Stripes
Newly engaged Carrie booked over to the iconic main branch of the New York Public Library in her Proenza Schouler studded snakeskin heeled strappy sandals (and mustard safari vest by the same designer) only to realize it was the perfect place for a Manhattan writer to marry her millionaire. Who thought the handsome groom would check out before the lavish ceremony?
Because this style of shoe is from the designer's Spring 2008 collection, it's now only available pre-owned on the secondary market priced at whatever the seller can get.
5 In The Pink
It called her name from the store window, and Carrie responded "Hello lover," as she approached hurriedly, with BFF Samantha in tow.
These frilly Christian Louboutin Petal Sandals clocked in at $995 (back then one of the most expensive items SJP ever wore on the series) but are no longer available on the primary market. In the episode titled "I Heart NY," these were the fuchsia gems Carrie was going to wear on her last date with Mr. Big before he left NYC. But alas, Miranda went into labor and because girlfriends come first, Carrie rushed to hospital where the mom to be's water broke all over her pal's ruffled feet. The author said goodbye to her new footwear and old boyfriend all in one night.
4 A Silver Lining
Carrie was shoe-shamed for her "extravagance" when a party guest of her friend Kyra helped themselves to her Manolo Blahnik Sedaraby d'Orsay pump with rhinestone buckle. (The hostess had a no-shoes-inside-the-house rule.) At the time, Kyra had to pony up $485 to replace the stolen pair, but a few years ago--the last time this style was available in retail--it was for $755.
Mr. Blahnik has retired this particular d'Orsay for now but is sold on the secondary market (eBay, Poshmark, etc.) for whatever the market will bear. A cursory search revealed this style is offered for less than $200.
3 Something Blue
Something old, something new, something borrowed, and something of a shoe that is a best seller for Manolo Blahnik, hence it is still part of the designer's collection.
It's called the Hangisi Satin Pump and currently retails for $995. It's also available with a kitten heel and as a flat. In the first SATC movie, Carrie actually had to be reminded by her assistant Louise (Jennifer Hudson) that she'd left the royal blue stilettos in the apartment she was supposed to share with Big after they got married. The columnist hurried over for her shoes and left re-engaged.
2 Golden Girl
File these under "all that glitters." In Sex and the City 2, a now wealthy Mrs. Big paired her white Halston dress with a pair of sparkling Christian Louboutin Pigalle Gold Stiletto Pumps valued at $3,095.
Since these are from 2009, let's count our blessings these tempting tootsie treats are not around except perhaps on the re-sale circuit. If you'd like a pair of sparkly shoes that are brand new, then the look for less can be procured via Jimmy Choo whose comparable Romy Glitter Degrade Pumps currently retail for $750.
1 The Best Medicine
The doctor is in (and on.) It's not easy being a New York gal about town. Running here. Running there. Always in spike heels. No matter how fabulous or fabulously expensive, after a while, they've got to hurt, or at least pinch just a little. Even It Girl Carrie Bradshaw had to give her little piggies a break once in a while.
Her prescription for pain-free feet: Dr. Scholl's Original Collection Sandal at $90 and worth every foot massaging cent. Leave it to Carrie to keep her pair pretty in pink.
