Tales From The Borderlands Releasing On Nintendo Switch In 2021

As part of its return to digital storefronts, all episodes of Tales From The Borderlands are coming to the Nintendo Switch for the first time in 2021. The series was originally released on PC and consoles - though not Nintendo consoles - in 2014. After developer Telltale Games closed its doors, Tales From The Borderlands was among the studio's titles that were removed from storefronts. While the Borderlands franchise was still owned by Gearbox Studios, the title remained unavailable for purchase for years.

There was a rumor that Telltale was being rebuilt after LCG Entertainment purchased the rights to several of its assets, but Tales From The Borderlands was still not available for purchase. The only (legitimate) way to play it was to use the Steam login or console of someone who had purchased and downloaded the game while it was available. That held true until last week when Gearbox and publisher 2K Games announced that all five "episodes" of the game, originally sold separately, will again be available to purchase as a set and can be played on the Xbox Series X/S and PlayStation 5 via backward compatibility.

In today's Nintendo Direct video, Nintendo announced that the entire Tales From The Borderlands collection will also be coming to the Nintendo Switch. The game has not been adjusted or remastered, but it contains all the content from the original title - most likely minus the feature at the end of each level that allowed players to see how their dialogue and action choices compared with those of other players, which is also absent from the upcoming Xbox Series X/S and PS5 versions. The game takes place between the events of Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel and Borderlands 2telling the rise of fan-favorite villain Handsome Jack and the Hyperion Corporation. Unlike main-series games, Tales From The Borderlands includes Telltale's signature dialogue choices and quick-time events, allowing players to choose how they respond to the words and actions of NPCs. Tales From The Borderlands will be available for purchase on March 24, 2021.

Besides the obvious significance of this essential Borderlands game coming to the Switch (following the release of the Borderlands Legendary Collection), Tales From The Borderlands' rerelease on any platform is something that should be celebrated. Borderlands fans and casual gamers alike will enjoy Telltale's signature humor and style in the game - something that many players haven't been able to experience since the studio shut down and its games were removed from storefronts. Because the game is already divided into episodes - another Telltale calling card - players who take advantage of the Switch's portability will likely appreciate its more short-form adventures.

Hopefully, Tales From The Borderlands' Switch release sets the standard for other games from fallen developers whose assets are in limbo. There's obviously a market for Telltale's old adventures, and players are eagerly awaiting news of other rereleases or even continuations of old series. It's up to developers and publishers at large as to whether these wishes will be fulfilled.
