The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD Revealed For Nintendo Switch
Zelda is getting yet another remake on Nintendo Switch, this time with The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword. The new Nintendo Direct revealed that the beloved Wii game is coming to Nintendo Switch. This marks the first entry into the Zelda franchise since Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity released in late 2020.
The series has seen massive success on Nintendo Switch with Breath of the Wild widely regarded as not only one of the best launch games ever, but one of the best games of all-time. A follow-up is in development but Nintendo has remained mum on it since its reveal at E3 2019. To tide players over, Nintendo released a remake of Link's Awakening, and now, the Japanese gaming giant is bringing even more of Link's classic adventures to the handheld/console hybrid.
Nintendo has announced that The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD will release on July 16th, 2021 for Nintendo Switch with motion controls. Similar to the Wii version, players will use the right Joycon for the sword and the left Joycon for the shield. Using both Joycons will allow the player to wield a bow and arrow. The game can be played with standard controls for those in handheld mode or using the Nintendo Switch Lite, players will use the analog sticks to have more accurate control over the sword similar to something like Ubisoft's For Honor.
Zelda producer Eiji Aonuma went on to note that Skyward Sword was the last mainline Zelda title prior to Breath of the Wild and served as an inspiration for that title. Anonuma hopes that players who enjoyed Breath of the Wild will revisit Skyward Sword on Nintendo Switch and more info on the game's sequel will be revealed later this year. Nintendo will also be releasing a pair of blue Zelda-themed Joycons on July 16th as well. The remaster of Skyward Sword leaked last year via an Amazon listing but given there wasn't an immediate reveal, it sort of faded out of people's minds. It's possible the game was expected to be revealed much sooner but Nintendo delayed the reveal following development complications or an internal delay.
It doesn't appear as if the game is getting much of a visual overhaul from the game's Wii counterpart, so don't go in expecting a full remake of the game. It appears that the game will be more of a port of The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword rather than anything too crazy. It was recently revealed that a Netflix series based on The Legend of Zelda was canceled following a leak. Netflix was unhappy that info of the series got out ahead of a proper reveal and ended up pulling the plug on the show as it was in pre-production. It's unclear if Nintendo will ever choose to revisit The Legend of Zelda as a live-action property following this drama.
