The Sims: Why Drew Carey Used To Show Up At House Parties
The Sims is no stranger to celebrity guests; past expansions have been centered around pop sensation Katy Perry and the characters from Lost. The original The Sims celebrity cameo, however, belongs to Drew Carey. Carey is now the host of The Price is Right, but he was more well-known for his sitcom and his animatronic appearance in one of Disney's worst park rides when he popped up in The Sims. As the series' first celebrity inclusion, the bespectacled funnyman set the stage for many collaborations to come, and the way he actually shows up in-game remains a unique quirk of the original The Sims.
Carey was introduced in one of the first of what would be many The Sims expansions to come, House Party. The main crux of this add-on is the ability to throw a party, with Carey serving as the reward for getting everything just right. Players need to hire entertainers, invite a good number of people, and keep things fun for at least 135 in-game minutes in order for a big-time celebrity to hear about it.
Once the party reaches its apex, Carey's in-game Sim NPC will roll up in a limo to liven things up even further. Carey will greet every Sim at the party once he arrives, including any ghosts who happen to be haunting the house. Everyone there will continue to think about Carey for the rest of the party once he arrives, including any pets and robots in attendance, but players can't have their Sims interact with him in any significant way, due to his NPC status.
It may be confusing for modern The Sims fans to learn that Drew Carey, of all celebrities, was developer Maxis' first choice during the days of the original game. A cameo of his may have made more sense in a wrestling video game than a social sim, after all, due to his Royal Rumble appearances. However, two separate episodes of The Drew Carey Show parodied The Sims, which helped cement the game as a pop culture mainstay. One episode had the characters speaking mock-Simlish throughout the entire opening, while the other featured a scene animated using the game. Including the sitcom's titular star was likely a fine tradeoff for all that mainstream exposure.
Nowadays, with his gameshow host gig and renewed image, Carey has once again become a celebrity that would fit right into the modern The Sims games. If EA is ever looking for a gameshow host for a future expansion, it would be a great throwback to include the man behind the Plinko board as a nostalgic callback to the classic The Sims game.
