WandaVision Actor Doesn’t Think Jimmy Woo Disappeared In Thanos’ Snap
WandaVision’s Randall Park, who plays Jimmy Woo, doesn’t think his character disappeared in Thanos’s snap. WandaVision is Disney+’s first television entry into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The meta, genre-bending series follows Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen) and Vision (Paul Bettany) as they move through sitcom history and grow their family in the mysterious town of Westview. Though their suburban neighborhood appears innocent at first, the show becomes increasingly more sinister as questions arise concerning how and why they’ve come to the town.
FBI Agent Jimmy Woo made his first MCU appearance in Ant Man & The Wasp. He served as parole officer for Scott Lang (Paul Rudd), who was on house arrest after the events of Captain America: Civil War put him at odds with the Sokovia Accords. Despite trying, and failing, to catch Scott in the act of violating his parole, Jimmy was good-natured and friendly. He appeared again in WandaVision as one of the first to discover the Westview anomaly after an informant in witness protection disappeared. This led to Jimmy being one of the leads into the investigation of Wanda and Westview. Between the Ant-Man sequel and WandaVision, the Marvel Cinematic Universe experienced Thanos’ snap, which erased half of all living things from existence for five years.
Asked by Insider whether Jimmy was a victim of the snap, Park admitted he didn’t know, saying he had asked but "never got a clear answer." However, he revealed his own theory: that Jimmy didn’t disappear because he debuted a card trick in WandaVision that he was seen attempting in Ant-Man and The Wasp. In Park’s mind, "He had to have that time" in order to learn and master the trick.
Park’s theory is a decent one based on what limited information we have about the character. However, he himself admitted that the trick only took him "a couple of days" to learn as an actor, so Jimmy wouldn’t necessarily have needed the full five years to perfect it. Whether or not their character was present for those years does seem important to the actors, though, as Kat Dennings (who plays Darcy Lewis) also built her own backstory with the WandaVision writers. In that case, they also decided Darcy hadn’t been a victim of the snap.
Director Tyler Hayward (Josh Stamberg) didn’t disappear either. This is known because he became director of SWORD in those five years. That makes Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris) the only member of the WandaVision supporting cast who had disappeared, at least among those outside the town. This further emphasizes Monica’s connection to Wanda; they both disappeared for those five years, and they both came back mired in grief (Wanda after losing Vision, and Monica for the unexpected loss of her mother).
"The Blip," as Thanos’ snap is known in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, looms large over WandaVision. Beyond forging a connection between Monica and Wanda, the events of Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame seem to have been what set Wanda on the destructive course that has entrapped Westview. The events of the Blip years may not be quite that significant for Jimmy Woo, but it was clearly a traumatic period for all of the MCU residents, whether they disappeared or not. Perhaps the MCU will further explore the effects of The Blip on non-superpowered characters like Jimmy in a future project.
