A Very British Scandal Miniseries Casts Paul Bettany & Claire Foy
Paul Bettany and Claire Foy have been cast in the miniseries, A Very British Scandal. The BBC and Amazon series will be a follow-up to A Very English Scandal, and portray dramatized events of the Jeremy Thorpe scandal of the 1970s. The 2018 series, which starred Hugh Grant and Ben Whishaw, was met with a positive response from critics and won several awards, which earned it a second installment.
According to Variety, Bettany and Foy will be portraying the Duke and Duchess of Argyll, a couple infamous for their divorce in the 1960s. The two will explore the lives of the characters as their marriage publicly fell apart when scandal unfolded.
Foy will certainly not be stepping far out of her acting comfort zone for the role of the Duchess, as she is best known for her royal performance in seasons 1 and 2 of The Crown as a young Queen Elizabeth II. As for Bettany, the 49-year-old actor has recently been involved primarily with the Marvel Cinematic Universe for his portrayal of the Avenger, Vision.
The hour-long, three-episode series focuses on the divorce of the Duke and Duchess of Argyll, one of the most notorious, extraordinary and brutal legal cases of the 20th Century. It was infamous for featuring accusations of forgery, theft, violence, drug-taking, secret recording, bribery, and an explicit Polaroid picture. The series will examine how the Duchess refused to go quietly as she was betrayed by her friends and publicly shamed by a society that reveled in her fall from grace.
