Being the Ricardos: Full Cast Set For Lucille Ball & Desi Arnaz Movie
Aaron Sorkin's Being the Ricardos has announced its full cast list. The upcoming Amazon Studios film centers on I Love Lucy icons, Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz, and their personal relationship behind closed doors as they navigate filming. Ball and Arnaz's children, Lucie Arnaz and Desi Arnaz Jr., are signed on as executive producers, championing Sorkin's screenplay and the casting choices.
Lucie Arnaz confirmed in January that Nicole Kidman was set to step into her mother's shoes. The announcement stirred fans, with many wishing a comedic performer like Debra Messing had been cast in the role instead. Cate Blanchett was originally attached to the movie back when it was called Lucy and Desi. Kidman's Desi Arnaz will be Javier Bardem, whom the casting department eyed straightaway.
Ahead of the production's start, Variety confirmed the rest of the glittering cast list. Tony Hale, Alia Shawkat and Jake Lacy are signed on to play real life collaborators of I Love Lucy. Hale will portray Jess Oppenheimer, the sitcom's executive producer and head writer. Meanwhile, Shawkat and Lacy are set to tackle Madelyn Pugh and Bob Carroll Jr., who served as writing partners on the beloved series.
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. star, Clark Gregg, also joined the film, alongside Nelson Franklin, John Rubinstein, Linda Lavin, Robert Pine and Christopher Denham. Balancing out the Arnaz pair is the previously-announced J.K. Simmons and Nina Arianda as I Love Lucy co-stars, William Frawley and Vivian Vance.
Sorkin's Being the Ricardos will document one production week on I Love Lucy, from the table read on Monday to the live studio audience taping on Friday. During which, catastrophe strikes for Ball and Arnaz, with the potential to end both their careers and marriage. The movie will dive into the couple's famously chaotic relationship, in contrast with the happy-go-lucky characters they brought to life onscreen.
I Love Lucy stitched its spot into the fabric of television history after running from 1951 to 1957. Being the Ricardos won't attempt to recreate the show's legacy, but shed light on what was happening personally for its stars during filming. With the Arnaz siblings onboard, the production already has an air of authenticity to it. Lucie Arnaz has been particularly vocal about the project, which has been a longtime in the making. She eased the worries of fans by saying no one is going to attempt to impersonate her famous parents. No matter what, it will be a thrill to see the '50s costumes and the I Love Lucy set recreated.
