Coming To America 3: Release Date, Cast & Story Details
Will Coming to America 3 ever happen? In March 2021, Amazon Prime released the highly-anticipated Coming to America sequel, and critics immediately pointed out that it retreads humor from the original production. However, even if Coming 2 America continues to receive lukewarm reviews, streaming numbers will likely determine the fate of a possible third installment.
In Coming 2 America, Prince Akeem (Eddie Murphy) and Princess Lisa Joffer (Shari Headley) celebrate their 30th wedding anniversary. The couple has three daughters and seems happy, yet the ailing family patriarch, King Jaffe Joffer (James Earl Jones), feels disappointed that his son doesn't have a male heir. When Akeem learns that he does in fact have a son living in Queens, New York, he disrupts the family dynamics in Zamunda and tries his best to follow royal traditions. Unsurprisingly, Lisa and her eldest daughter, Meeka (Kiki Layne), remind Akeem that customs aren't more important than their family's collective happiness.
Based on critic reviews, Coming 2 America is indeed entertaining but shows little creative ambition. Murphy has plenty of moments to shine, but the movie feels like a comedic event rather than a progressive sequel, at least when factoring in all the guest stars and celebrity cameos. As of now, it doesn't seem like a third movie will happen in the immediate future, but the producers may find a way to extend the series, maybe even with a new star in the lead role.
As of now, Coming to America 3 isn't in the works. Amazon Prime will presumably track streaming numbers for Coming 2 America over the course of several months, and then discuss the possibility of a third movie. Moving forward, Murphy doesn't necessarily have to be the focus of the franchise, as some of the younger stars are more than capable of headlining a new movie.
If Coming 2 America proves to be a massive streaming hit, then Amazon Prime will probably try to produce Coming to America 3 within the next few years. If Murphy seems enthusiastic about making another installment, then a new movie could very well be produced and released by 2024. However, it seems that Coming to America 3 will probably be a film that's discussed over the next several years without really gaining momentum, at least if Murphy doesn't immediately commit to the project.
Coming 2 America positions Fowler as the possible star of Coming to America 3. If Amazon Prime viewers respond positively to the sequel, then Coming to America 3, with a stronger script, would allow Fowler to show off his full skill set. It's safe to assume that all of the regulars will reprise their roles, however it seems like Murphy may be ready to pass the torch to Fowler or Layne.
If Murphy isn't the main headliner in Coming to America 3, there's a huge opportunity to showcase the talent of both Fowler and Layne. The sequel reveals that Meeka is now in position to become the Queen, and that Lavelle will serve as an ambassador to America. So, that's a strong premise for a third franchise movie, as Fowler's storyline could be fundamentally comedic, while Layne's character arc could be more dramatic with timely commentaries about gender and female leadership. After starring roles in If Beale Street Could Talk, Native Son, and The Old Guard, Layne is clearly a star-in-the-making, and could very well be the primary lead for Coming to America 3.
