Eternals Merchandise Gives New Look At Celestials & Deviants
Leaked Eternals merchandise presents a stunning look at designs for the Celestials. An ancient race who existed when the universe was young, the Celestials are legendary in the MCU. Viewers were given a first glimpse of them in Guardians of the Galaxy, when the Collector presented one of them - recognizable as a Celestial named Eson the Searcher in the comics - wielding the Power Stone as he judged an unknown world.
The Celestials appear to be almost extinct in the modern MCU, but Eternals is expected to span millennia, and so the Celestials are expected to play a prominent role. That makes sense, because in the comics, the Celestials were the ones who created the Eternals and the Deviants, evolutionary offshoots of humanity. Their role seems to have been switched up a little in the MCU as some comments have suggested the Eternals' origin has been changed, and they are now powerful aliens who were sent to Earth to protect humanity. However, the Celestials are still involved. Now, leaked merchandise has offered fans a look at promotional artwork featuring the cosmic beings.
Some Eternals merchandise recently slipped through the net, published by Kohls and spotted by Murphy's Multiverse before it was taken down. The images feature promotional art of both the Celestials and Kro, leader of the Deviants. The design of Kro matches perfectly with a Marvel Legends action figure for Kro that leaked in October 2020.
The designs are stunning, and it's interesting to see how much they focus on Arishem, who serves as a judge figure in the comics, and it increasingly looks as though he is the most prominent of the Celestials in the film. The artistic style is reminiscent of Jonathan Hickman and Dustin Weaver's SHIELD series, perhaps suggesting the designs have been influenced by modern interpretations as much as those by Jack Kirby, who created the Eternals.
It's reasonable to assume the merchandise was published by accident, because at one point Eternals was scheduled to release in February 2021. It was pushed back to November as a knock-on effect of the coronavirus pandemic. Marvel is by no means the first film studio to struggle to prevent tie-ins and merchandise leaking during this period, with the Wonder Woman 1984 junior novelization accidentally published months before the film finally released. But Marvel is particularly reluctant to allow information to come out on upcoming projects right now, presumably waiting until they're more confident about hitting release dates; they haven't even put out an official trailer for Eternals yet. For now, leaks like this are all that fans can get.
