Is Agatha Harkness in Doctor Strange 2? How (& Why) She Could Return

Agatha Harkness' future in the MCU is bleak following WandaVision, but there's still a possibility that she will appear in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Originally introduced as Agnes, Wanda and Vision's nosy neighbor in Westview, the character was revealed to be the primary villain of the recently-concluded Marvel Studios series. In an effort to discover how Wanda was able to create the pocket reality, Agatha befriended her and posed as an ally; it was only at the very last moment of WandaVision episode 7, "Breaking the Fourth Wall" that the old witch revealed her true colors.

In the grand scheme of things, this WandaVision plot twist shouldn't have been that surprising. There were already theories that Agnes was indeed Agatha Harkness ever since her name was confirmed. However, the string of red herrings helped keep the focus away from her, making her villainous reveal still effective. WandaVision ended with Agatha and Scarlet Witch in an intense witchcraft battle, with the latter eventually outsmarting her more experienced adversary by using Agatha's own rune trick against her. Instead of killing her, however, Wanda simply brought back her Agnes persona, one unaware of her ability to wield magic.

Marvel Studios has long been known for their one-off villains; most standalone bad guys meet their ends in their respective projects, so it's interesting that despite Agatha being defeated, she survived the events of WandaVision. What's more, Agatha made a point to tell Wanda that one day, Wanda would need her. There is currently no word on her potential future in the MCU, but if they do bring Agatha back, it would make sense for her to make her next appearance in Doctor Strange 2. Beyond her connections to Wanda and her general knowledge of the Sorcerer Supreme, she's also integral in learning more about the Darkhold, a.k.a. the Book of the Damned in the MCU. In the comics, it was created by Chthon and is a collection of dark magic spells, but it's unconfirmed if it's also the case in the live-action franchise. Since Scarlet Witch's immersion in it as seen in the WandaVision post-credits scene might lead her down a dark path, Doctor Strange may want to better understand what the book can do and turn to Agatha Harkness for information.

Otherwise, there's also the possibility of Karl Mordo finding Agatha in Westview in his pursuit of other magic users. The disillusioned former member of the Masters of the Mystic Arts left the order after learning that both the Ancient One and Doctor Strange drew powers from the Dark Dimension for different reasons. In the Doctor Strange post-credits scene, the zealot Mordo was revealed to be going around stripping sorcerers of their powers in the hopes of restoring balance. Similarly, this was what Agatha attempted to do to Wanda, believing Wanda was wasting all her vastly powerful and dangerous capabilities on living her simple fantasy life.

Whatever happens to Agatha Harkness past WandaVision, keeping her alive is a good sign that she still has a potential, even likely, future in the MCU. Even if Marvel Studios isn't exactly sure what to do with her at this point, it would be fairly easy to re-incorporate her into the franchise considering her final fate on the Disney+ series. But considering how popular she quickly became, they might not want to shelve her for long, making Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness her perfect comeback project.
