Minecraft Has A New Best Emerald Location In The Caves & Cliffs Update
The Caves & Cliffs update is on the Minecraft horizon, and so is a new best way to find Minecraft's emerald ore. Emeralds are primarily used to barter with villagers and wandering traders, and the main means of obtaining emeralds in the current version of Minecraft is by selling items to villagers. This can be a long and tedious process, and it might be replaced when Minecraft 1.17 finally releases later this year.
Emeralds made their Minecraft debut in version 1.3, which released in 2012. Players could find scarce amounts of emeralds inside chests found in naturally generated structures or by mining emerald ore. However, mining for emeralds is extremely inefficient, as they are the rarest ore in Minecraft and they only spawn in mountain biomes. Players soon discovered it was much easier to amass a large number of emeralds by building villager trading halls and farms that produced the items they could trade with villagers.
Setting up a functional villager trading hall can take a long time and is usually a project attempted in the later stages of a Minecraft world. Luckily, Minecraft's Caves & Cliffs update is changing mining forever by making huge adjustments to how ores are distributed. Emeralds will be more common in mountain biomes, which will make them easier to find than some of the game's most common ores.
While Mojang Studios hasn't officially settled on distribution rates for ores, snapshot 21w10a revealed the latest iteration of the approximate ore distribution rates. Minecraft's emerald ore is still limited to mountain biomes, but it no longer spawns in scarce amounts between Y-levels 29 and 0. Instead, emerald ore will spawn between Y-levels 32 and 256. Along with its expanded range of spawn points, mountain peaks will make emerald ore more common than iron and coal. Players will have to trek hundreds of blocks up the sides of mountains to reach these emerald ore-rich areas, but these locations will make finding emerald ore easier than ever before.
It's important to note the Caves & Cliffs update will drastically change how all ores spawn in Minecraft. As the chart above indicates, players will have to mine on different levels, depending on what ore they are searching for. Diamonds will be easier to find the lower players go, and the lowest levels will have more diamonds compared to where they are found in the current version of Minecraft. However, Minecraft's new cave generations will make it easier to find all sorts of ores, due to their increased openness.
