Overwatch Delays Season 27 Launch Following Patch Issues

Blizzard has delayed the launch of season 27 of competitive Overwatch due to issues with the latest patch. Even though players are looking forward to the sequel, with Overwatch 2 rumored to be cross-platform, the original game is still hosting competitive play for its strong playerbase. After the most recent patch has caused a number of technical issues in Overwatch the developers made the decision to delay next season. In the meantime, the current Overwatch competitive season has been extended, to the delight of players everywhere.

Overwatch is a character-based team first-person shooter, standing on the shoulders of legendary genre games such as Team Fortress 2 and League of Legends. Teams are made up of two tanks, two healers, and two DPS characters, with each role having a pool of heroes to pick from. Teams face off in various game modes, including assault, escort, control, and hybrids of the three.

When the developers of Overwatch attempted to roll out the update for season 27, several technical issues popped up. Unfortunately, the team wasn’t able to fix the issues quickly enough, instead opting to extend the current season while they worked on a fix. This information comes from a blog post on the official Blizzard forums, posted by Josh Nash, a Community Manager for Overwatch

Overwatch’s competitive mode runs in seasons, similarly to other online games with a higher competitive mode. In competitive mode, players are matched against others of similar skill levels, facing off in a longer form of the regular Overwatch Quick Play mode. Depending on the outcome, players will either go up or down in rankings. Each season changes up the rules for competitive mode, including banning certain heroes from play and which maps will be available.

During this extended season, players can earn some extra rewards such as sprays. Additional competitive credits, which can be exchanged for golden weapons, will not be earned. Players who have reached the Top 500 for their region who have already claimed their rewards will not be able to claim another end-of-season reward for season 26.

Season 27 of Overwatch competitive mode is now set to release on March 9 at 11 AM PST. This is the current plan, provided the developers are able to solve all the current technical issues. Hopefully, these issues don’t hold the team back too far, with fans eagerly awaiting the release of Overwatch 2. The sequel is not slated to release in 2021, with a suspected Overwatch 2 release in 2022 if the development goes well and no more technical issues pop-up.
