Riverdale: The 5 Most (& 5 Least) Believable Character Deaths

Since Riverdale first aired on the CW in the spring of 2017, the series has established itself as a drama-filled with mayhem, mystery, and murder. For the last five seasons, approximately 79 people have died, which is not typical for a series about teenagers. While some deaths were on the more predictable side and made sense for the character, others were a complete shock and almost unrealistic.

Regardless of whether or not a certain death was found to be believable, the deaths are always interesting. Riverdale is very skilled at using these deaths to advance the plot of the show and only rarely kills off its characters just for dramatic effect.

10 Believable: Jason Blossom

The series kicks off with the mysterious death of Jason Blossom. In the first episode, viewers are told that Jason drowned in Sweetwater River, while on a boat ride with his twin sister Cheryl, during Fourth of July weekend. By the end of the first season, viewers learn that Jason was shot by his father Clifford because he threatened to reveal his father’s secrets.

This death is probably the easiest to believe because it was the catalyst for the entire plotline of season one. Plus once viewers learn how Jason actually died, it’s not hard to believe that Clifford Blossom would put his wellbeing over his son’s.

9 Unbelievable: Rupert Chipping

One of the most shocking on-screen deaths was Rupert Chipping. Mr. Chipping was Jughead’s favorite professor at Stonewall Prep. He was also a member of the secret society Quill and Skull and a former ghostwriter for the Baxters Brothers book series.

It was extremely hard to believe that Mr. Chipping would want to take his own life by jumping out of a window while teaching a class. While it makes sense that he was feeling immense guilt about plotting a murder, this was still kind of out of left field when it initially happened.

8 Believable: Clifford Blossom

By the time viewers learn about Clifford Blossom’s death, it has already been revealed that he murdered his son. With that knowledge in mind, it is not hard to believe that Clifford could be taking another life. In season 1, it is revealed that Clifford took his own life after he found out that everyone knew he murdered Jason.

The Blossom family cares very deeply about their reputation, which explains why Clifford couldn’t continue living once he found out his secrets were exposed. Of course, it's even more believable when it was revealed that his wife actually poisoned him, given their history.

7 Unbelievable: The Blossom Board of Trustees

Throughout the series, viewers have come to learn that Penelope Blossom is not opposed to murder. With that in mind, it is shocking that she would kill members of her own family. In season 5, Penelope reveals to Cheryl that she poisoned the entire Blossom family Board of Trustees so that Cheryl could maintain control of the family empire.

While Penelope loves Cheryl very much, it's very surprising that she would go so far as to kill multiple people and stage it in a different way, just to give her daughter a leg up.

6 Believable: Edgar Evernever

Edgar Evernever is one of the most memorable villains to stir up trouble in Riverdale. As each week went by, his character only became eviler and eviler. When Alice Cooper killed Edgar by shooting him right before he was able to escape in a rocket he built, it did not come as a big surprise to the viewers.

Fans had already known that Alice was deeply involved with The Farm and that she was working with the FBI to take them down.

5 Unbelievable: Hal Cooper

When Riverdale revealed in one of the final episodes of season 2 that Betty’s dad Hal Cooper was the black hood, it was a big shock. However, an even bigger shock came when Penelope Blossom killed Hal in the season 3 finale.

This came as a big surprise because Penelope and Hal had always had a romantic relationship with one another. It was very hard to believe that Penelope could kill someone she had such a strong connection with, no matter what he had done.

4 Believable: Francis DuPont

Francis DuPont first joined Riverdale in season 4, when Jughead started attending Stonewall Prep. Jughead and DuPont immediately developed a contentious relationship. The headmaster wanted to sabotage Jughead’s chances of becoming the next ghostwriter for the Baxter Boys series and prevent Jughead from digging into his grandfather’s connection to the series.

After Jughead exposed Dupont’s twisted history of murder, Dupont jumped out of the same window Mr. Chipping did and fell to his death. It was not a big surprise that Dupont would rather die than live with the shame of all of his lies and the prison time he would receive for the murders.

3 Unbelievable: "The Shady Man"

While few were surprised to discover that Alice Cooper murdered the cult leader Edgar Evernever, it was very shocking to see her clean the blood of “the shady man” off her living room floor.

In season 2, Alice’s “son” Chic killed a drug dealer who was trying to kill him in the Cooper household. Alice helped Chic clean up the mess and even helped him hide the body, to protect him. It was very surprising that someone was murdered at the Cooper house, and even more shocking that Alice had something to do with it.

2 Believable: Bret Weston Wallis

Brett Weston Wallis was one of Jughead’s biggest rivals during his stint at Stonewall Prep. Not only did he compete with Jughead academically but he also was part of a group that wanted to hurt him physically. In season 5, Brett ends up serving time in jail for the crimes he committed and is able to let go of his disdain for Jughead.

He is killed by Chic after he tells Jughead and Betty who the Auteur is. It wasn’t surprising to learn that Bret had died in jail because Chic had killed before, so it makes sense he would murder Brett for revealing his big secret.

1 Unbelievable: Fred Andrews

Fred Andrews's death on Riverdale was unquestionably one of the most shocking and upsetting deaths of the entire series. The show’s writers and producers never intended to kill off Fred but unfortunately had to end his character when Luke Perry, the actor who portrayed him, passed away.

Fred’s character was always a fan favorite and to discover that he was killed in a hit-and-run while trying to help a woman struggling on the side of the road was heart-wrenching.
