Sons Of Anarchy: The 5 Most (& 5 Least) Realistic Storylines

FX series Sons Of Anarchy has been described as an accurate portrayal of biker gang culture. Just like in real-life biker gangs, SAMCRO and other clubs similar to it in the series had a hierarchical structure that included a president, vice president, sergeant-at-arms, treasurer, road captain, and prospects.

The stamp of approval aside, it's not possible for a show about fictional characters to be 100% realistic. Taking great leaps for purposes of entertainment is common. In as much as the plot arcs in the show were based on what was likely to occur in real life, there were several storylines that would never fit into the real world.

10 Realistic: Jax & Tara's Romance

Real-life couples are rarely the perfect fit for each other and such was the case with Jax and Tara. She was a well-educated doctor while he was an outlaw who dropped out of school. She knew she didn't belong in the messy world of Charming. She left the town in her earlier years but as fate would have it, she found herself back.

Such is what happens with love. It makes people do things they thought they'd never do. Tara tried to leave Charming again a couple of times but her feelings for Jax kept her there. Though he was dangerous, he was loving and exciting. He never abused her like her ex-boyfriend Josh, who was actually a law enforcement officer.

9 Unrealistic: Opie's Parole

When viewers were first introduced to Opie, he was on parole after serving 5 years. He was now working at a Lumberjack mill, though the job wasn't paying him well. Jax thus approached him and asked him to rejoin SAMCRO since his services were needed. His wife Donna was against it but he did it anyway.

So, Opie just broke his parole conditions with no consequences? Paroled prisoners are not allowed to engage in any criminal activity. They are also closely monitored by their parole officer. Surprisingly, Opie had no parole officer on his neck. There was no one to ask him why he was no longer working at the Lumberjack mill and report him for breaking terms of his parole.

8 Realistic: The True IRA's Weapons Trade

In the show, the True IRA sold illegally-made arms to gangs all over the world, including SAMBEL and SAMCRO. The organization provided some of the most formidable villains in the show such as Galen O'Shay and Jimmy O'Phalen.

The organization still exists in real life and it's still causing problems to the UK government. Its incorporation into the Sons Of Anarchy storyline revealed just how complicated and chaotic 'organized' crime is. Though there have been several splinter groups, their goal mostly remains the same.

7 Unrealistic: The Homeless Woman

The homeless woman appeared throughout the series though it was never explained who she was. She mostly appeared whenever Jax and Gemma were going through emotional turmoil or whenever death was about to occur.

Some fan theories suggested that she was Brooke Putner's mother Emily. Well, Emily was killed during John Teller's fatal accident. However, series creator Kurt Sutter revealed that she was Jesus Christ. If this was the case, then the storyline is less believable. Why would Jesus give Jax his blanket so that he could kill August Marks?

6 Realistic: Wendy's Drug Addiction

Wendy's drug habit caused Abel to be born prematurely. She then had to temporarily give up the rights to raise him as she worked on getting clean. For a few years, Wendy had to bear with seeing Abel being raised by Tara. She also lost Jax to Tara yet she loved him deeply. Bad habits make people lose a lot and Wendy's case was no different.

When she became clean, she tried to become a part of Abel's life again. Any mother would definitely miss her children after a long absence and Wendy's efforts (though excessive) made a lot of sense.

5 Unrealistic: Unser's Cancer

Early in the series, it was mentioned that Unser had cancer and that's why he was considering retiring from the police force. The fact that he was considering retiring meant his cancer had gotten really bad.

Strangely enough, Unser never underwent any treatment like TV characters such as Walter White. There was no chemo and no updates about the progress of his cancer. His sickness was never given proper attention or a good amount of airtime. And if he had undergone remission, the information should have been included in the plot.

4 Realistic: Clay & Gemma's Plan To Kill JT

In organized crime, leaders get overthrown all the time. The desire for power is always present among juniors. JT wanted to get out of the drug trade hence Clay began questioning his leadership. Clay was also seeing JT's wife Gemma. The story of a brother betraying another by sleeping with their spouse is all too common.

Gemma has a history of being attracted to tough men and she must have felt that JT's recent actions meant he was becoming soft. She no longer loved him anymore and that's why she never opposed Clay's plan to kill him.

3 Unrealistic: Josh Kohn Was Allowed To Come To Charming

Tara's ex, the ATF agent Josh Kohn stalked her to Charming after she fled from Chicago. He pretended that he was investigating SAMCRO's weapons trade yet he was just trying to get back together with Tara.

Since Tara had a restraining order against Josh, it's surprising that he was allowed to come and build a case in Charming. Since the ATF is a top government agency with plenty of intel, the higher-ups there must have been aware that Josh had a restraining order, and the woman who had filed it was in Charming. Why allow him to go there?

2 Realistic: The Manner In Which Jax Bowed Out

In the final moments of the series, Jax killed himself by crashing his bike into an oncoming truck. Coincidentally, it was the same truck that had carried Gemma several episodes earlier. Though gruesome, the decision made a lot of sense. SAMCRO members didn't fear death and this was proof of that.

Jax had also done a lot of damage and a major nightmare awaited him. August Marks' crew was going to retaliate, even if he got jailed. The club had also passed a Mayhem vote against him for killing Indian Hills president Jury White. He was going to die anyway, so he chose to do it on his own terms. He also wanted to honor his father JT by dying the same way he did.

1 Unrealistic: Juice's Decision To Betray SAMCRO

With the help of Sheriff Eli Roosevelt, AUSA Potter targeted Juice, seeking to turn him into an informant. After finding out that Juice's father was black. Potter took advantage of an old law established by SAMCRO's founding members aka the First 9. The law banned African Americans from joining the club. So, Potter threatened Juice to cooperate all he will tell.

Juice agreed to cooperate. One wonders why he would do that. He had the easier option of coming clean to the club about his heritage. The worst that could have happened would have been him losing his patch. And in the event that this occurred, he could have easily joined one of several black gangs in California such as the One-Niners and the Grim Basterds.
