The Amazing Race The 10 Most Boring Road Blocks, Ranked
The Amazing Race remains to be one of the highest-rated reality competition shows on television. This CBS show presents all kinds of challenges, some of which are incredibly difficult while others are rather weird. These include the Roadblock, which are also downright genius since they can delay a team and ultimately, cost them the entire race.
That said, fans may also note that not all Roadblocks presented on the show have been impressive despite the level of difficulty (and how much frustration they bring). As a matter of fact, here are some of the most boring ones featured so far:
10 Learning To Play The Banana Boat Song
What’s great about Roadblocks is that only one team member can perform it and depending on how difficult it is, a Roadblock can delay a team badly and ultimately, end their race.
During the start of Season 32, the teams made their way to Trinidad then Tobago where one person from each team had to perform The Banana Boat Song using a steel pan. And while some contestants managed to master the instrument quite easily, there were others who seriously struggled.
9 Spelling Out Ingólfstorg
During the premiere of Season 30, teams immediately flew from the U.S. to ReykjavÃk, Iceland and at some point, one person from each team had to ride an off-road buggy and take an excursion around the riverbed. Here, they were required to ride as many times as necessary just to spell Ingólfstorg, which is a square in ReykjavÃk.
Only after the contestant has spelled the square correctly could the team receive their next clue and move on. Admittedly, the word can be a little challenging to spell but a spelling bee isn’t exactly the most exciting task one can have.
8 Shopping For Ingredients For A Rolex
Over the years, The Amazing Race has featured some interesting food challenges. Fortunately, for contestants of the show’s 31st season, they didn’t have to eat anything too intense.
However, they had to help one by doing some shopping. In this case, they had to shop for ingredients for the preparation of a Rolex while they were in Uganda. Here, a Rolex is a breakfast wrap where eggs, tomatoes, onions, and cabbage are placed on a chapati then rolled.
7 Answering Phones
During Season 30, there was a time when teams had to undergo a Roadblock that required answering phones. Here, the chosen team member would step into a room full of ringing phones and the goal was to identify eight with a voice on the other end of the line.
Here, they also had to listen closely for eight words that belong to a quote from Prague native Franz Kafka. Once they had determined the words, they must unscramble them and present the decoded quote to get their next clue.
6 Taking Smørrebrød Orders
During Season 25, the teams had to make their way to Copenhagen, Denmark where they eventually encountered a Roadblock that involved smørrebrød. These are popular open-faced sandwiches that can be topped with just about anything. In this challenge, the chosen team member had to take smørrebrød orders from two customers.
Then, they also had to recite the order’s menu number along with the ingredients required. Granted, this challenge has some level of difficulty. However, it is also not as exciting as other Roadblocks in the past.
5 Finding UN Flags
In Season 28, the teams flew out to Switzerland where they got to learn more about the United Nations, specifically its founding members. That’s because, during the leg’s Roadblock, the participating team members had to locate the flags of the founding nations which were outside the Palace of Nations.
During the challenge, the contestants had to locate 10 flags overall. And for some teams, it made sense to work together on this challenge. As fans of the show would know, there are times when alliances can certainly help you advance further on this show.
4 Harvesting Sugarcane
In Season 26, the teams fly to Peru and during a Roadblock, the participating team member had to harvest an entire section of sugarcane crops from the field. And it is only once the contestant has finished their section could they receive their next clue.
The task did take a lot of hard work (some even struggled to complete it). However, there’s really no thrill or excitement here so it was quite boring to watch teams finish this task.
3 Spotting The French Revolution Motto
There are times when The Amazing Race likes to give a little bit of history lesson in the middle of the race. Such was the case in season 27 when teams faced a second Roadblock upon arriving in Paris, France.
Here, the participating team member had to take a scenic plane ride through the French countryside. During the flight, they had to spot three words that represent the motto of the French revolution. Granted the challenge looked great on camera but this is one of those tasks that make the show feel stale.
2 Matching An Actor To A Painting
Granted, Roadblocks are one of those challenges that truly keep the show interesting. That said, this Roadblock presented during the show’s latest season was not exciting at all. While the teams were in France, they made their way to a museum where there a sort of party going on.
And as it turns out, the people at the party are all dressed up exactly like the characters on the paintings that adorned the walls. To complete the challenge, the team member must match one person from a character on the painting correctly.
1 Preparing Place Settings
Unfortunately, The Amazing Race’s Season 32 featured another Roadblock that lacked excitement or thrill. Towards the end of the season, the remaining teams made their way to India where the assigned team member had to ten perfect place settings on India’s longest table.
It was a task that certainly put teams in unfamiliar territory, so it took them some time to gain approval and receive their next clue. That said, this challenge was still remarkably boring, and watching the teams go through it left fans dozing off.
