Fast & Furious: Dead Characters Who Should Return (Because Han Is)
With Fast and Furious 9 bringing back Han Lue, there are several other characters from The Fast and Furious franchise who were supposedly dead who also need to make their respective returns. There's a lot to be excited about in the upcoming installment of the car-centric film series. Firstly, it's the beginning of its final trilogy as the whole saga ends with its 11th entry. Secondly, it will also properly tackle Dom's past with the movie's primary antagonist being his own brother, Jakob, who is backed by Fate of the Furious villain, Cipher. However, arguably one that many are most hyped up about is the impending appearance of Sung Kang who reprises his role as Han after being absent for so long.
Han's origin story was properly chronicled in Justin Lin's Better Luck Tomorrow; surviving that story, the filmmaker brought the character into the Fast Saga when he was hired to helm The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift. He was originally introduced as Sean Boswell's mentor in the Japan-set installment and was eventually established to be a member of Dom's team. Due to the non-linear timeline of the franchise, Han was still able to appear in Fast & Furious, Fast Five, and Fast & Furious 6 despite his supposed death in Tokyo Drift. This is because the said movie's events directly lead into Furious 7 with the revelation that Deckard Shaw was behind his car crash. This was all in part of his efforts to avenge what happened to his brother Owen at the hands of Dom's "la familia" during their previous encounter.
For years, the Fast Saga operated as if Han's really gone — for better or worse. While the team moved on from his death and focused on new adventures, many didn't appreciate that Deckard essentially got away with his murder and even welcomed into Dom's crew in Fate of the Furious. Now, the franchise has a chance to deliver on the Justice for Han movement with his upcoming return. In conjunction, this firmly establishes the idea that dead characters can come back following Letty's fake-out demise in Fast & Furious. Given this, the film series has a string of previously killed heroes and villains whose potential re-emergence can make the Fast Saga's impending ending so much better.
Han's girlfriend and a trusted member of Dom's crew, Gisele Yashar was originally a liaison for Braga in Fast & Furious. She somehow developed feelings for Dom resulting in her decision to betray her boss and join the mechanic's crew. The 2009 film was Gal Gadot's first feature appearance and for the next several installments of the Fast Saga, she became an integral part of the crew while simultaneously starting a relationship with Han. She died in Fast & Furious 6, but like Han, Gisele has a personal connection to Lin as it's the director who introduced the character to the franchise. Considering how central their relationship was to Han's own storyline, coupled with Lin back behind the camera, it's not outside the realm of possibility that Gisele also pops up in F9 or even in future movies. Now that Gadot has become such a massive star thanks primarily to her role as Wonder Woman, it would be great to see her back in the Fast Saga which was where she first got her start in the business.
Dom's crew has evolved and changed members over the years, and while the core team has remained intact in the last several movies, the original The Fast and the Furious movie from 2001 saw the team's first massive loss through Jesse's death. Like almost everyone in the squad, Chad Lindberg's Jesse was engrossed with cars, functioning as their mechanic. But, he's also a computer genius; he did background checks on people that the team encountered and sorted out the logistical aspect of their missions. Unfortunately, after refusing to give up his Volkswagen Jetta upon losing in Race War to Johnny Tran, he was killed in a drive-by ambush. Granted that the character's body was shown lifeless, there are several ways that the Fast Saga can bring Jesse back to F9 and beyond. Not only will he be useful as the team up against Cipher who's a cyberterrorist, but it will also be a heartfelt reunion with Dom and Mia which fits well with the idea of culmination in the franchise.
Introduced in Fast & Furious 6 as a member of Luke Hobbs' team, Agent Riley Hicks was eventually revealed to be a double agent as one of Owen's mercenaries and also his lover. During the movie's final battle, Letty shot Riley out of the speeding plane using a harpoon gun, sending her out of the aircraft. Gina Carano's character in the Fast Saga was introduced as a mirror of Letty and since Dom's wife was also once believed to be dead, it makes sense thematically if the franchise decides to also bring her back. Considering how late it was in the movie when her true allegiance was revealed, the film series wasn't really able to capitalize on the great rivalry between her and Letty, and thus it would be exciting if they face each other again in the future.
One of the more recent impactful deaths in the Fast Saga is Elena Neves' demise who debuted in Fast Five as one of the Rio military officers working with Hobbs DSS' to track down Dom and Brian for killing three DEA agents. During her time with the team and while Letty was presumed dead, she started a romantic relationship with Dom which resulted in the couple having a baby. Cipher used this in Fate of the Furious to blackmail Dom, but upon failing one of his missions, she ordered the killing of Elena in front of him. Despite this, her remains were never seen, and between that and the Fast Saga having a history of fake-out deaths, there's still a chance that Elena re-emerges. If Dom does die at the end of the film series, it would be interesting to see Elsa Pataky reprise her role as Elena as she and Letty come together to raise his son for him.
Admittedly, Brixton Lore wasn't a part of the primary Fast Saga - as instead, Idris Elba played the villain in the spin-off, Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw. However, this is what actually makes his potential resurrection interesting. The character technically already died when Deckard was mandated by MI6 to kill his disillusioned colleague, but apparently, Eteon recovered Brixton's body and resurrected him using their technology. He was given cybernetic and mechanical implants earning him the nickname Black Superman. At the end of Hobbs and Shaw, Brixton was once again defeated, but while the heroes refused to end his life, he was remotely terminated by the mysterious Eteon; considering his current make-up, however, he might just easily be rebooted. Not that the main Fast Saga needs any more bad guys, but revealing that Eteon and Cipher are actually connected can make for a more cohesive overall franchise. Brixton returning also gives Hobbs and Shaw the opportunity to join Dom's crew in the remaining The Fast and Furious movies.
