Marvel: 4 Scenes Where Wolverine &Cyclops's Rivalry Verged On Flirtation (& 4 Where It Verged on Hate)

With their witty banter and infinitely competitive nature, it almost seems like Wolverine and Cyclops are flirting with each other in many of their scenes. Add on the fact that there’s a whole comic book theory dedicated to a steamy rendezvous between Cyclops and Wolverine on the moon and you’ve got more than enough evidence that there’s some romantic tension between the two superheroes. Even though they’ve never been canon onscreen, their scenes often beg the question: “Are they flirting?”

Conversely, there have been some moments between James "Logan" Howlett and Scott Summers that verged on them downright hating each other. Especially when it comes to their mutual love of Jean Grey. Their relationship with each other becomes a superhuman love triangle for the ages. But who’s really in love with who?

8 Flirtation: Cyclops Makes Wolverine Chuckle

In X2 (2003), after Wolverine explores Alkali Lake to find out information about his past, he returns to the X-Mansion. Upon arriving Wolverine sarcastically asks Cyclops whether he’s going to welcome him home? Cyclops doesn’t answer and instead dryly stares at Wolverine. Then, to go a step further Wolverine chucks a set of keys at Cyclops and says, “Your bike needs gas.” To which Cyclops throws the keys back at wolverine and responds, “Then, fill her up.” This back-and-forth earns a little smirk from Wolverine.

7 Hatred: Wolverine Won’t Shake Hands With Cyclops

In X-Men (2000), Cyclops attempts to formally introduce himself to Wolverine once Wolverine wakes up in the X-Mansion for the first time. Wolverine is understandably feeling like a caged animal trying to get out. It's curious that Wolverine won't shake Cyclops’ hand even though Cyclops just saved his life the day before.

Instead, Wolverine grabs Cyclops by the shirt collar and threateningly says, “You wanna get out of my way?” Although they are almost close enough to kiss, this fiery exchange gets their relationship off on the wrong foot.

6 Flirtation: Wolverine In Yellow Spandex?

In X-Men (2000), Wolverine is uncomfortable wearing the all-black outfit for the first time that the gang wears when they fly on the Blackbird. Wolverine asks: “You actually go outside in these things?” Cyclops jokingly says, “What would you prefer? Yellow spandex?” Of course, this is a call-back to the classic wolverine outfit from the comic books. Cyclops’ snarky retort to Wolverine even gets a little grin from the generally stoic Jean Grey.

5 Hate: Cyclops Tells Wolverine Off

In a memorable moment in X-Men (2000), Jean Grey uses her powers to recollect Wolverine’s memories, leading to an intimate, almost romantic spark between the two characters. Cyclops barges in and interrupts their potential romance. Wolverine and Cyclops then share a heated exchange where Cyclops tells Wolverine, “Stay away from my girl.” Wolverine shrugs off the intimidating statement from Cyclops. Nobody tells Wolverine what to do, especially Cyclops.

4 Flirtation: Wolverine Makes Cyclops Chuckle

In the third act of X-Men (2000), when Cyclops, Wolverine, Storm, and Jean Grey break into the Statue of Liberty to battle Magneto and save Rogue, a metal detector goes off as Wolverine enters.

He tears apart the metal detector with his claws. Then, he flips Cyclops the bird for good measure with his middle Adamantium claw. This even gets a little giggle out of Cyclops, which results in an unexpectedly light moment between two characters who usually don’t find each other amusing.

3 Hate: Cyclops Accuses Wolverine Of Endangering Their Mission

In X-Men (2000), after Cyclops has thanklessly saved Wolverine’s life twice, he’s had enough of Wolverine’s attitude. Cyclops proclaims to Professor X that he doesn’t want Wolverine to join them on their mission to battle Magneto. Cyclops even thinks that Wolverine will endanger the mission to which Wolverine responds: “Why don’t you take your little mission and stick it up your a**” Needless to say, Wolverine and Cyclops are not getting along at this point. They're like two crude bickering children at this point with their verbal jabs at each other. Wolverine ends up joining them on the mission regardless of Cyclops’s warning.

2 Flirtation: Cyclops’s (Not) Smooth Landing

At the end of the second act in X-Men (2000), as Storm, Cyclops, Jean Grey and Wolverine approach the Statue of Liberty in the Blackbird, Cyclops lands the Blackbird ungracefully, plopping it into a body of water. It’s a clumsy enough mistake by Cyclops that he even blurts out, “I’m sorry.” Wolverine then jabs, “You call that a landing?”

It’s yet another moment of playful, competitive banter between the two that has an air of tension. Sometimes the line between banter and flirtation is very blurry.

1 Hate: Wolverine Imposter Test

In X-Men (2000), during a scene in which Cyclops can’t tell whether Wolverine is an imposter because Mystique has transformed into a doppelgänger of Wolverine. The real Wolverine proclaims, “It’s me!” Cyclops then skeptically says, “Prove it.” To which Wolverine responds, “You’re a d***.” That dry, blunt response is enough to convince Cyclops and the rest of the X-men that it’s the real Logan.  Although they're prickly toward each other, they're always honest about how they feel. Fortunately, Wolverine’s true feelings toward Cyclops are what saves him.
