NieR Replicant's New Remaster Content Shown Off In Trailer

On April 19, Square Enix broadcasted a trailer for NieR Replicant featuring extra content exclusive to the remaster. First released in 2010, NieR and its alternate edition NieR Replicant (released exclusively in Japan as NieR Gestalt) have had a cult following for years, while its roots in the Drakenguard series were even more obscure than these spin-offs. However, seven years later, a new release in the form of NieR Automata brought the games into the mainstream outside of Japan, offering a critically acclaimed sequel to the originals that can be enjoyed without prior knowledge of the world and story; this game also gave support for the pc modding community.

With the widely positive reception of the new game, fans have been more interested than ever in the franchise's roots. NieR Replicant is a direct result of Automata's success, offering players of the hit sequel a new way to enjoy the Replicant experience outside of Japan with remastered graphics and releases on current consoles and PC. Earlier this month, it was confirmed by the game's producer that cut content from the original game, along with new bonus content, will be making its way to the remaster, and more specifics are finally available in the new trailer.

Featured in this trailer, which was originally part of a Square Enix livestream, are several additions from new boss fights to dungeons to cosmetics, which will be available for the game's remastered edition. First shown in the trailer is the new set of dungeons labeled "15 Nightmares" for players to battle through; these were released as DLC for the original game from 2010. Another expansion to the gameplay comes in the form of the extra "Mermaid" episode, which sees players make their way through a mysterious shipwreck to battle "an invincible and mighty Shade that could never be killed."

Also shown in the trailer are extra cosmetics labeled "Kabuki Samurai" and, for fans of NieR Automata, a cosmetic and weapon pack titled "4 YoRHa" which features skins and weapons from Automata's story that will be free to download on launch. As a part of this crossover, the soundtrack from the sequel will also be available for players to listen to outside of story missions. In addition, players of the most recent entry will notice the iconic voices of NieR Automata's main characters 2B, 9S, A2, and others in the game's extra content.

Overall, NieR Replicant is shaping up to follow in Automata's footsteps as a massively popular RPG, and it's almost certain to surpass the acclaim of the original release. With remastered graphics to fit the aesthetic of Automata and an abundance of new content for long-time fans and newcomers alike, this game is a much-welcome sight in an industry that many argue has shifted to prioritize greed over the end product. NieR is also another wonderful example that single-player games are as alive as ever and that companies don't have to cram season passes or battle royale into franchises to make them successful.  For those who can't wait to get their hands on this remaster, NieR Replicant will be releasing worldwide on Xbox One, PS4, and PC on April 23, 2021.
