Super Smash Bros: Who Is The Oldest Character In The Series

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate contains characters from throughout the history of video games, but which fighter is the oldest? At the time of writing, the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate character that comes from the most recent game is Fire Emblem's Byleth, as Fire Emblem: Three Houses was released in 2019.

One of the best aspects of the Super Smash Bros. series is seeing retro characters reborn in 3D, giving gamers a chance to see them in a modern title. These include the EarthBound/Mother characters, who have remained in the gaming consciousness because of Super Smash Bros., as well as characters like the Ice Climbers and Duck Hunt duo. It's always fun to see these retro characters crossing blades with sleek, modern fighters, like Joker from Persona 5 or Bayonetta.

The newest fighter dates back two years, so the oldest characters' game release dates go back much further. There are plenty of Super Smash Bros. characters who debuted on the NES, but a few predate even Nintendo's first home console.

It's very close in terms of release date, but the oldest fighter on the roster in terms of video game appearances is Mr. Game & Watch. He first appeared in a game called Ball, which was released in April 1980. The second oldest is Pac-Man, as the original Pac-Man arcade game was released a few months later, in July 1980. Pac-Man's reveal trailer for Super Smash Bros. 3DS/Wii U even references this, with Mr. Game & Watch coming out at the end with a date over his head.

There is one character who is technically older than both Mr. Game & Watch and Pac-Man, however, as it debuted in a Nintendo product that was released before the company entered the video game market. The duck that is part of Duck Hunt duo dates back to 1976. As cataloged by the beforemario blog, the Duck Hunt video game was inspired by an electro-mechanical Nintendo toy of the same name.

The 1976 toy came with a light gun and a projector attached to a moving mirror. The projector displayed an image of a duck on the wall, which was moved around by the mirror. It used very similar animations to the Duck Hunt video game nearly a decade later, though the iconic dog wasn't involved. The Duck Hunt toy isn't a video game, which means the oldest playable video game character in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is Mr. Game & Watch, but the duck technically predates him by four years.
