What Granny Goodness’ Cameo Was Setting Up In Justice League 2 & 3

Granny Goodness appears in Zack Snyder’s Justice League establishing her prominence on Apokolips and setting up the pivotal role she may have played in Justice League 2 and 3. Though Granny doesn’t speak in the film, she is featured alongside Darkseid, indicating a close relationship to the Lord of Apokolips. Officially, the exact nature of Granny’s role remains a mystery, although Snyder has confirmed a number of elements from his intended sequels.

Granny, though not mentioned by name, may have had a key part in these sequels. For those unfamiliar with Granny Goodness from DC comics and animation, she was seized as a child and trained as a soldier by Darkseid. After proving herself and becoming a feared military leader, Granny was tasked with overseeing the “Orphanage” on Apokolips. There, she oversaw the production of loyal soldiers, trained using brainwashing and torture. Given Granny’s appearance (with “mega-rod” in hand) and proximity to Darkseid in the Snyder Cut, her combat skills and brutality may have taken center stage in the sequels.

Snyder has described his Justice League 3 plan as basically a "New Gods invasion" movie, so it’s likely Granny would have led the invasion of Earth with the Female Furies. The Female Furies are Apokolips’ most elite warriors and Darkseid’s personal guard commanded by Granny and often led by Big Barda, another intimidating New God. Granny may have also had a role in the Knightmare, where it stands to reason Granny would have used the Furies as the strike team to hunt down Batman’s ragtag team as they attempt to steal the Mother Box.

In many ways, Granny sets up Justice League 2 & 3 by way of acting as a bridge to other characters and situations that could serve to create additional hurdles for the League. This is why her inclusion in the Snyder Cut is significant, especially knowing Snyder had big plans for several of the New Gods. The additional time with her could have given the opportunity to tease a number of New Gods like Kalibak, the eldest son of Darkseid, and Scott Free, a prisoner of Darkseid who escapes to become Mister Miracle.

While Mister Miracle would likely not have appeared in a sequel, it's the kind of Easter egg Snyder loves to use because of the larger story implications. Regardless, Granny’s presence in the so-called Snyderverse opened the DCEU to new worlds and characters to explore because, if she exists, she brings connections to a plethora of characters and stories to pull from in future films.

Granny Goodness’s cameo in Zack Snyder’s Justice League provided a glimpse at an alternative future for the DCEU. One where Granny Goodness could have been integral in Darkseid’s conquering of Earth and the elimination of Batman’s Knightmare team. Moreover, Granny’s cameo stands as an Easter egg for those who understand the significance of her character in other media and recognize the possibilities establishing her character represents. Regardless of Granny Goodness's true intended role, it's clear Zack Snyder had plans for the character.
