What Valheim Weapons Can Cut Down Trees | Screen Rant

Wood is a high-priority item for most types of crafting in Valheim. As one might expect, collecting Wood is a matter of cutting down the different kinds of trees found in various biomes across the map. However, players can't chop trees with just any of Valheim's weapon. Most full-sized tree types require an axe of Stone level or better to be knocked down. Because of this, obtaining higher-quality Wood early in the game can be a struggle.

Certain tree saplings, like the Beech sapling, can be broken down by hitting them with unarmed attacks. While accessible, this is a time-consuming way to get the needed Wood for Valheim weapons and shelter, as saplings don't drop anywhere near as much Wood as full-sized trees. Players should prioritize crafting a Stone Axe when first starting the game. The Stone Axe costs x5 Wood and x4 Stone to craft and can be made before the sun goes down on the first day of gameplay.

Cutting down trees can be a hazardous job in Valheim. Large trees can crash down on players if they aren't careful, dealing a decent amount of damage. Trees can also damage each other, however, which can be a useful harvesting strategy for players attempting to collect Wood from Oak or Birch trees before they have obtained a required Bronze Axe. To knock down Oak and Birch using this method, players must intentionally topple the Beech trees into them. A Troll can also be used as a sort of hostile lumberjack for Oak and Birch trees if players can lure it into the correct area during combat.

Below is a list of every tree in Valheim, how it can be knocked down, and what it can potentially drop. Certain trees offer valuable resources other than Wood, like Resin and Bark, which are needed for important crafting recipes such as Torches.

  • Beech Tree - Stone axe or better. Drops Wood, Resin, and Beech Seeds.
  • Fir Tree - Stone axe or better. Drops Wood and Fir Cones.
  • Pine Tree - Stone axe or better. Drops Wood, Core Wood, and Pine Cones.
  • Ancient Tree - Stone axe or better. Drops Wood and Ancient Bark.
  • Birch Tree - Bronze axe or better, damaged by other trees or Trolls. Drops Wood and Fine Wood.
  • Oak Tree - Bronze axe or better, damaged by other trees or Trolls. Drops Wood and Fine Wood.

Amassing Wood can be a lengthy task, and tree farming in Valheim can be frustrating, so setting aside in-game time to search biomes for needed tree types can be a useful strategy. Players will want to pack several axes along and stick to Stone axes when possible so as not to waste a Bronze axe on trees that don't require it. This should allow fans of Valheim to keep a steady, varied supply of Wood at hand for any crafting or building needs.
