Arrowverse Explains A Kate Kane Batwoman Mystery In Season 2

Warning: SPOILERS for Batwoman season 2, episode 2, "Prior Criminal History".

Batwoman season 2, episode 2, "Prior Criminal History" provided a clever explanation for why nobody in the Arrowverse at large had connected the simultaneous disappearances of Kate Kane and Batwoman. Given that both women were famous out-and-proud lesbians who made their homes in Gotham City, it's surprising that some unscrupulous press outlet didn't try to push a claim that they were one and the same, in accordance with the usual comic book tropes.

Secret identities are part and parcel of the superhero genre and the various Arrowverse series have milked a lot of drama out of the heroes' need to deny who they are. This has resulted in some clever (and not so clever) ruses to throw off the suspicion of various authorities. Who would suspect Barry Allen, the CSI who is always running late, of being The Flash? Batwoman has already addressed this issue once in its first season, with Julia Pennyworth having helped Kate Kane to be in two places at once by impersonating Batwoman in the episode "Tell Me the Truth", after Kate's ex-girlfriend Sophie Moore began to suspect that Kate was Batwoman.

While Sophie and Kate's father, Jacob Kane, learned the truth of Kate's secret identity in Batwoman's season 2 premiere, it's natural for superhero fans to wonder why the public didn't seem to notice that Batwoman vanished at the same time that Kate Kane went missing after the plane bringing her home to Gotham City crashed. "Prior Criminal History" offered an explanation for this, while simultaneously confirming that barely a week had passed between it and Batwoman's season 1 finale. This fact was revealed in a news broadcast regarding how Batwoman was last seen being ambushed by Crows Security after Jacob Kane betrayed their alliance to work together to capture an Arkham Asylum escapee on a killing spree earlier in the week.

Video footage of the Crows ambushing Batwoman at a football stadium was leaked to the press, turning the public against the private security company while boosting public support for Batwoman. This culminated in a public rally in support of Batwoman and in protest of the Crows' brutality. It also brought about Ryan Wilder donning the Bat-Suit one more time when Mary Hamilton and Luke Fox found themselves in need of a substitute Batwoman to try and break-up the rally before Alice could enact some sort of sinister scheme centered around it.

Ironically, it was Jacob Kane's vendetta against his own daughter that wound up providing the perfect cover for her secret identity. The general public was so convinced that Jacob Kane had become a Captain Ahab chasing after Batwoman that everyone presumed Batwoman was laying low after nearly being killed by the Crows. Nobody suspected that Batwoman was missing because Kate Kane had gone missing, despite her disappearance being the other big news story in Gotham City that week.
