DCeased: Dead Planet's Loose Ends Could Lead To Another Story

The long awaited finale of Tom Taylor’s DCeased: Dead Planet has finally arrived, but amid the victories and happy reunions are a few lingering questions - loose ends that could tie in to a potential sequel series.

One of DCeased’s saddest moments was when Superman became infected with the Anti-Life virus in DCeased #5. Despite his best efforts to distance himself from Earth to save the people from what he would become, the undead Superman wreaked havoc on the planet, killing Wonder Woman in the process. However, the Green Lantern corps soon arrived to fend him off. Rather than face the cavalry, Superman instead flew directly into the sun, where his kryptonian body could safely feed on the solar energy and become even stronger. Fast forward to DCeased: Dead Planet #1 - when the new Justice League returns to Earth, Kilowog tells Jon that his father is “still eating a star,” foreshadowing a battle between the two Supermen that never occurred - at least, not yet.

Superman isn’t the only anti-living powerhouse still out there. DCeased: Dead Planet #4 saw the undead Darkseid break free of his molten cocoon and attack New Genesis. Apokolips was one of the first places to fall to the Anti-Life virus. When Darkseid became infected, he dove into the core of the planet, causing it to explode. However, when the heroes attempt to steal the Mobius Chair from Metron to give Cyborg a power upgrade, their conflict causes the planet’s now molten core to crack, allowing the trapped Darkseid to escape. Issue #4 ends with Darkseid’s arrival on New Genesis, but readers are left to imagine the destruction he unleashed since the series never followed up on what happened there.

Superman and Darkseid are two of DC’s heaviest hitters, so the fact they are still out there carrying the virus means this conflict isn’t over just yet. Superman alone is fast enough to re-infect a significant portion of the population, especially since he has been absorbing solar energy uninterrupted for years now. Meanwhile, Darkseid has likely infected most if not all of New Genesis, meaning an army of anti-living gods could be on the way, as well. Darkseid is the villain behind DCeased's zombie apocalypse, so facing him would be a poetic way to bring the story around full circle. There’s also Earth-2, where the survivors who escaped the planet in the first DCeased settled down. Who knows what transpired there during this time? With the Justice League gone, the planet may not be able to fend off an attack from the likes of Darkseid or other hostile aliens. All this to say, there is plenty of material left over for another series.

There is currently no word on if DC has plans for another DCeased sequel. However, considering there are still many heroes who survived Dead Planet and the fact there are still plenty of story points to follow up on, it seems like a real possibility.
