Sonequa Martin-Green's 10 Best Movies & TV Shows, Ranked By IMDb


Fans may know her best for kicking zombie butt as Sasha in The Walking Dead, or zooming through space as Michael Burnham in Star Trek: Discovery, but Sonequa Martin-Green has so many more amazing roles. Mostly appearing in television, she has also worked in independent film and theatre.

Drawn to acting due to her interest in psychology, Martin-Green approaches every role with depth and thoughtfulness, whether she is working in a primetime drama or a family film. It was announced in 2019 that Martin-Green had been cast as Savannah Jones in Space Jam: A New Legacy. The popular family classic is tentatively set to premiere in the summer of 2021, and will also star LeBron James and Don Cheadle.

10 NYC 22 (Michelle Terry) - 6.5

NYC 22 (pronounced 2-2) was an episodic police procedural that first aired in 2012. The series followed a group of rookie police officers working the streets of Upper Manhattan.

Sonequa Martin-Green appeared in 5 episodes as Michelle Terry. Unfortunately, the show was not unique enough from the many other series of its kind, and it was canceled after only one season.

9 Penn Zero: Part-Time Hero (Pirate Maria) - 6.5

A children's animated series developed for Disney XD, Penn Zero: Part-Time Hero whisked young audiences into the wild adventures of a part-time hero who takes off to different dimensions to save friends of all kinds that are in need of a helping hand.

Sonequa Martin-Green played the role of Pirate Maria, a minor character featured in season 2, and a love interest to Penn. The series premiered in 2015 and ran for two seasons.

8 The Outside Story (Isha) - 7.1

Written and directed by Casimir Nozkowski, The Outside Story is a slice of life dramedy that follows a quiet, broken-hearted video editor (Brian Tyree Henry) who spends all of his time hidden inside the safety of his small apartment.

It all changes when he gets locked out with no shoes or wallet and is forced to explore the outside world. Sonequa Martin-Green co-stars in the role of his ex-girlfriend, Isha.

7 Army Wives (Kanessa Jones) - 7.2

Life in a military family can be tough, but Army Wives explores the strength and unique bond found between a group of military spouses.

Running for seven seasons from 2007 to 2013, Martin-Green appeared in three episodes as Kanessa Jones, a high school student interested in joining the Army. Though Kanessa is a minor in the series, Martin-Green was in her early 20s at the time that it aired.

6 Star Trek: Discovery (Michael Burnham) - 7.2

Known for his work in the development of popular shows such as Hannibal, American Gods, and Heroes, Bryan Fuller worked his genius once again with Star Trek: Discovery.

Taking place ten years prior to Star Trek: The Original Series and 100  years prior to Enterprise, it follows the determined Starfleet science officer, Michael Burnham, and the rest of the crew that pilots the USS Discovery.

5 Law And Order: Criminal Intent (Kiana Richmond) - 7.4

Guest-starring on one of the Law and Order shows often seems like an actor's rite of passage. Sonequa Martin-Green got her chance to cross that threshold in 2008 as Kiana Richmond in the season 7 episode "Legacy".

The episode covers the story of a teenage suicide that suddenly turns into a shocking murder investigation at an exclusive private school.

4 New Girl (Rhonda) - 7.7

New Girl is never short on quirky and hilarious guest stars, and it doesn't break the streak with Sonequa Martin-Green. Featured in two episodes, she is the wild and unpredictable prankster, Rhonda, Winston's girlfriend and eventual ex-wife.

Martin-Green makes her appearance in season 2 as the sinister Tamara, a woman working with a mysterious company only known as the "Home Office". She is in seven episodes over seasons 2 and 3 before she is killed by Rumpelstiltskin in Neverland.

2 The Walking Dead (Sasha Williams) - 8.2

Sonequa Martin-Green plays the fierce and intelligent survivor, Sasha Williams, for seventy episodes in AMC's thrilling, post-apocalyptic drama The Walking Dead.

A main character from season 3 through season 7, Sasha proves herself to be brave, loyal, and selfless in her commitment to her friends and her family. She meets a tragic end by her own hand in hopes to save her loved ones from Negan and the Saviors.

1 The Good Wife (Courtney Wells) - 8.3

Prior to this, Martin-Green had only played roles as high schoolers or other minors, but she broke past that baby-faced barrier in 2009.

She found her first recurring, television role as an adult character in The Good Wife season 1.  She was featured in eight episodes as Courtney Wells, an aspiring paralegal that works for Alicia Florrick.
