WandaVision: Why Vision's Return Has To End In Tragedy For Scarlet Witch

Vision's return in WandaVision has to end in tragedy. The synthezoid returns to the MCU after being killed by Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War, and the new series gives him and Wanda a chance at a happily-ever-after in the small town of Westview. No matter how happy the couple is right now, especially with the arrival of their twins, Tommy and Billy, there's only one way Vision's inexplicable return will end: more heartbreak.

Paul Bettany has been in the MCU since the very beginning, originally providing the voice for JARVIS, Tony Stark's AI in the Iron Man movies. By Avengers: Age of Ultron, he was given a physical presence and became Vision. Powered by the Mind Stone, he automatically became a target in Infinity War, and since he was killed by the Mad Titan, Smart Hulk's reverse snap in Avengers: Endgame didn't bring him back. However, he returns to the MCU through WandaVision, as if all his death didn't happen.

Not much is known about the specifics regarding Vision's return, but amidst the sitcom references and humor, he's beginning to learn something is amiss; what's worse, he'll eventually realize he should be dead, as hinted at in the trailers. More recently, in WandaVision episode 3, Scarlet Witch manipulated him by enacting a time loop after he expressed his concerns that something is very wrong with their situation, particularly how quickly her pregnancy progressed. Between this and her attempt to hide the identity of the beekeeper, Wanda's ministrations have worked thus far, but she can only keep up with this fantasy world for so long, especially with her lover becoming more curious. Once he realizes what's really going on, he could be the one to convince Wanda to stop altering reality for her personal benefit and let him go.

Interestingly, this draws a parallel between WandaVision and Patty Jenkins's Wonder Woman 1984. In the latest DCEU film, Diana Prince was reunited with Steve Trevor after she made a wish to the Dreamstone - but, of course, there was a caveat. The artifact takes away something in return for every granted wish, and for Diana, being with her lover meant slowly losing her powers. This left her weak and unable to fight Cheetah and stop Maxwell Lord from doing more harm. In the end, Steve was the one to convince Diana to finally let him go so she could regain her powers. Granted, the setup and context are different with Wanda and Vision, but Marvel Studios could be setting up a similar heartbreaking separation - and perhaps they can do it in a better way. It's worth noting that Vision has already done this before in Infinity War when he convinced Wanda to destroy the Mind Stone on his forehead for the greater good, even though it meant killing him.

However WandaVision pans out, chances are that it's not going to end in a happily-ever-after for the titular couple. Much of their arc in the MCU has been defined by tragedy, and it's possible the show is building towards another one. Everything in Scarlet Witch's fantasy world may not be real, but a figment of her imagination only manifested through her ability to warp reality. SWORD appears to be attempting to stop this as it could also threaten the fabric of MCU's reality, but ultimately Vision may very well be the key to doing this.
