What SWORD Is Doing In WandaVision: Biggest Theories Explained

SWORD's mission in WandaVision could be heroic or villainous. The new organization in the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been trying to get into the town of Westview, which has seemingly been taken over by Wanda Maximoff, otherwise known as Scarlet Witch. The reveal that they've built an entire camp and perimeter around the town is very telling, and there's a few different possibilities as to what they're trying to accomplish.
While SWORD stood for the Sentient World Observation and Response Division in Marvel Comics and served as the world premier space defense program, the MCU's version of SWORD looks to be much more grounded, as the 'World' in the name has been changed to 'Weapon'. Wanda certainly fits the description of a "sentient weapon", which would explain why her actions in this series are of such interest and concern for the new group.
Hints and teases of SWORD's presence had been popping up in prior episodes, and Wanda herself has slowly become aware of them as time has gone on. While Wanda clearly sees SWORD as a threat, what do they really want? Are they trying to help Wanda? Do they believe that the entire town is in danger, or are they just as confused as viewers are as to what's happening and are merely trying to understand and contain the situation? Here's some possible theories as to SWORD's true motives.

In WandaVision episode 2, Wanda became aware of a voice coming from a nearby radio, calling out to her by name. The voice (which belonged to agent Jimmy Woo), continued to ask: "Who's doing this to you, Wanda?" until the radio shorted out. It's clear SWORD has been trying to find ways to communicate and make contact with her, and they believe some new threat has done something to Wanda and has her trapped in this TV sitcom reality of fiction.
It's possible SWORD had been brought in initially with the mission to try and save Wanda, attempting to help her get out of this false reality that's been created. However, it also seems like they've been monitoring the situation from the outside, as they've somehow been able to watch the "episodes" as they happen from their perimeter outside. They've been trying to send in agents, such as Geraldine (real name Monica Rambeau), as well as the Beekeeper to perhaps try and help Wanda. But it appears as though they've had little success. Monica became swept up in the Geraldine persona and was assimilated into Wanda's happy ending fantasy, taken over by her the "spell" of her power. Likewise, the Beekeeper hasn't been seen since he appeared before Wanda and Vision, and Wanda simply rewound time as though it had never happened.

It also stands to reason SWORD may just be trying to contain the situation, and that they're completely in the dark about what's going on. Wanda seems to be in control of a lot of what's happening in Westview, and SWORD may only just now be beginning to realize that.
Furthermore, the end of WandaVision episode 3 revealed the outside world after Wanda discovered that Geraldine/Monica did not belong. SWORD agents rushed the scene to where Monica had landed after being thrown through a sort of energy barrier that has covered the town. This indicates that Westview was indeed a real town before it had been taken over by Wanda's power. As such, SWORD could simply be playing things by ear, trying to get as much information as possible and merely containing the situation until they're able to come up with some sort of plan of action.

On the other hand, SWORD might have already come up with a plan, especially with said reveal that Westview was a real town. That indicates that there are real people living there, who've potentially been taken over by Wanda's power, becoming part of her sitcom fantasy.
This idea of the townspeople being real and held captive is supported by Wanda and Vision's neighbors, Herb and Agnes. They clearly know that something's wrong, just as as they know that Geraldine/Monica didn't belong in the town as she didn't have a home like the rest of them. Herb almost revealed why Monica had come to Westview, but trailed off as to the reason. However, it seems like a strong possibility that Herb was about to tell Vision that Monica came to their town because they're all trapped.
As a result, SWORD could be trying to send agents in with the intent to rescue the townspeople, searching for a means of getting all of these innocent people to safety, as they've essentially been held hostage. However, that mission seems to have been derailed somewhat with Monica being overtaken by the fantasy herself, until Wanda let her guard down when talking about the death of her brother Pietro. This lead to Monica remembering the real world, which motivated Wanda to throw her out, seeing her as a threat to her happy ending.

Now that Monica has been banished from Westview and Wanda's happy ending, it's seems likely SWORD will want to debrief Monica on what happened while she was on the inside. Depending on what Monica learned and reports, SWORD could very will determine that they need to be more proactive, and could be lead to make the decision that Wanda needs to be taken down with force.
While it seems as though SWORD hasn't yet been able to reach Wanda or stop her activities in the slightest, perhaps they've been holding back until they know more? Additionally, Wanda's hold on her fantasy could be slipping the more it progresses and evolves, becoming more complex and fleshed out with "added color". SWORD could begin to have an easier time breaking through and putting an end to Wanda's actions if that's the case.
Regardless, it's now evident that SWORD is not responsible for whatever is happening to Wanda, and it's more than likely that Wanda has created this fantasy all on her own, determined to hang onto it for as long as she can. SWORD could be trying to do do any one of these theories mentioned, a combination, or all of the above as Marvel's WandaVision continues. Hopefully, more details will come to light as the Disney Plus series continues at to the group's true endgame.
