Bachelor: Ben Higgins Reveals Prior Painkiller Addiction In New Book
Ben Higgins from The Bachelor revealed in his new book, Alone in Plain Sight, that he suffered from a painkiller addiction when he was in high school. The reality star released his new book on Tuesday, which reveals how Ben was able to find a connection within himself That allowed him to be more authentic with others.
This revelation is quite a shock to fans of the ABC reality franchise, since Ben seemed too perfect to have a rough past. During his time in the franchise, Ben has never spoken about his troubled past and only let fans in on the good he has in his life. Ben co-founded a Denver-based roasted-coffee business called Generous Coffee, alongside his business partner, Riley Fuller and Drew Scholl. The company uses the money it makes to support nonprofit organizations and other enterprises all over the world. This allows Ben and several of his friends in and outside Bachelor Nation to travel to different countries and to help build schools, clinics, etc., for people who do not have that luxury. There is much more to Ben then meets the eye.
According to The Daily Mail, the Denver native opened up in his book about his addiction to painkillers in high school after suffering a knee injury. Ben revealed his darkest point was when he began to "treat people like objects that existed for [his] pleasure." During a recent interview with Us Weekly, Ben admitted it was not the best time in his life, but he feels good knowing others will be able to relate to his story so no one has to feel ashamed or alone. The addiction started after Ben had to undergo surgery on his knee and was prescribed painkillers to ease the discomfort. Shortly after the surgery, Ben's world slowly began to deteriorate. Not only did he not get into the college he wanted, but he found out his girlfriend had cheated on him and his father's cancer had returned. "Getting off the painkillers became even more difficult when a different kind of pain hit," he wrote of the start of his addiction.
Ben was talking pills constantly for four months until one day he decided to stop. Ben looked at himself in the mirror and did not recognize the man looking back at him. "When I made eye contact with myself, I felt like the devil himself was staring back at me," he recalled from that day. ''Oh, God,' I said out loud. 'Who is this? This is not the man I ever wanted to be.'' He continued, "I really meant the words, 'Oh, God.' It was the first prayer I'd prayed in a very long time — and maybe the most honest prayer I'd ever uttered." From this pain, Ben found God. His faith helped him out of his dark past and he started a new bright one.
Ben also discusses his time on The Bachelorette and The Bachelor. He admitted that him and former fiancé, Lauren Bushnell, grew apart from each other and realized the relationship they created on the show was not they hoped it would be off the show. Since then, Ben has found the love of his life, Jessica Clarke, and the couple plan to marry in November 2021.
