Harry Potter: Why Dumbledore Should Have Been The Main Character (& 5 Reasons Why He Wasn't)

Albus Dumbledore is one of a kind. He is a character whose presence cannot be defined by mere words. His powerful stature in the Harry Potter film series is matched by none, barring, maybe, the Dark Lord himself. Regarded as one of the greatest wizards to ever step foot on Earth, Dumbledore's importance to the Potterverse can hardly be overemphasized.

The Headmaster of Hogwarts was a guiding light for so many of the young wizards in the school, and his presence invoked a sense of calm when everything seemed to be going wrong. Besides Harry Potter, if there was any character who deserved to play the role of the protagonist, it was Dumbledore - but there were some reasons why he didn't.

10 Should Have: Secrets Of Hogwarts

Without Albus Dumbledore, Hogwarts cannot even be imagined. It's as if the place was made out of his soul. Despite seeing Harry crawl through the corridors of the school for a long time, there are still a lot of secrets and stories hidden between the walls of Hogwarts. Stories that only Dumbledore and a handful few know about.

With Dumbledore as the protagonist, fans would have had the opportunity to learn more about the magical place. After all, Harry could see and tell only so much about Hogwarts in the years Potterheads saw him grow from a kid to a teenager.

9 Wasn't: Knows The Potterverse Inside Out

Harry Potter didn't know anything about the wizarding world just like many of the fans who hadn't read the books. With Harry, everyone went on a journey to the unknown, which is something that wouldn't have happened with Dumbledore, or any wizard who knew about the world of Hogwarts.

Dumbledore knew too much about the Potterverse and as a result, there's no way he would have been able to give the chills as the fans witnessed with Harry.

8 Should Have: Personal Life

Aberforth Dumbledore and Ariana Dumbledore had minimal screen time, but their appearances made the fans realize how little they know about Dumbledore. Everyone has seen the charismatic Headmaster of Hogwarts but no one knows anything about Dumbledore, the family man.

Dumbledore had many secrets and his family was as big as any. Also, the fact that he never talked about them made the fans only more suspicious and desperate to know more.

7 Wasn't: Meant To Be The Guide

Dumbledore's character wasn't meant to be more than a simple guide as Voldemort was never his fight. He wasn't the Chosen One and all he could do was prepare Harry for his dark future.

Dumbledore was the most important of the least important characters. He was a special attraction, who showed up in a lesser number of scenes than many but his influence on the story was stronger than any.

6 Should Have: Voldemort's Equal

There was only one wizard in the Potterverse who Voldemort was afraid to face alone and with good reason. Dumbledore was a wizarding genius, who had the power of the Elder Wand supporting him.

Without using any of the dark arts like Voldemort, Dumbledore could make the Dark Lord sweat for his life. Had the Headmaster of Hogwarts been the protagonist, Dumbledore vs Voldemort would have been quite something to see.

5 Wasn't: Never Involved Himself

If everything would have been shown from Dumbledore's point of view, chances are, the fans wouldn't have been able to witness the insane adventures of Harry, Hermoine, and Ron during their childhood.

Dumbledore hardly ever involved himself in getting rid of the potential dangers at Hogwarts. He always liked to take the back seat and more often than not, the fans would have been immensely bored by it.

4 Should Have: Relationship With Harry Potter

Severus Snape's memories conflicted with everything the fans came to understand regarding Dumbledore's relationship with Harry Potter.

The way Dumbledore talked to Harry made it seem like he cared about him when in reality, he was simply preparing him to face his death. It would have been fascinating to see what Dumbledore truly thought about Harry during the years when he was growing up.

3 Wasn't: To Show The School Life

In the early years when Harry Potter had just joined Hogwarts, Dumbledore wasn't a prominent presence. With Harry, the fans were able to see the good, the bad, and the ugly of Hogwarts, which is something that wouldn't have happened had Dumbledore been the protagonist.

The life of a wizard growing up in Hogwarts had as much drawing power as anything the Potterverse had to offer.

2 Should Have: Hunt For Horcruxes

Dumbledore was one of the only people in Hogwarts who knew about Voldemort and his Horcruxes. When the Dark Lord returned, Dumbledore started wondering about their presence and as such, he found one in the depths of a mountain range.

While the fans did get to see the eventual location where the Horcrux was located, they couldn't how Dumbledore's searched for that place. If the story was told from his point of view, the fans might have been taken on a surreal journey of Horcrux hunting with Dumbledore.

1 Wasn't: The Death Factor

Although Dumbledore's death came out of nowhere in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, it always felt imminent. It simply had to happen for the fans to witness a showdown between Harry and Voldemort.

It was a carefully constructed chess move from the Headmaster of Hogwarts. The final ploy to motivate Harry and Severus Snape to do their respective jobs. The move was a brave one and it was a big enough reason to not make Dumbledore the center of attention, as he wouldn't have been able to see the story through.
