Pretty Little Liars: Why Aria Is Actually The Show's Main Character

It would be easy to assume that Alison DiLaurentis is the main character on Pretty Little LiarsWhen fans tuned into the pilot for the first time, they learned that she was the Queen Bee of Rosewood who had disappeared, and her friends were left with an incredible mystery to solve.

But even though the story does circle around Ali, there's another major character who deserves a lot of attention. There are many reasons to see Aria Montgomery as the protagonist on Pretty Little Liars, from her long-term romance to her family to her involvement with two different mysteries.

10 There Was A Popular Fan Theory That Aria Was A

Some fans wondered if Aria was A and there were many Reddit discussions about it.

None of the other characters seemed to have so much potential to be A. If Aria did end up being this mysterious figure, that would definitely make her the main character. But even though this wasn't the case, it still makes her the main character because there are enough signs and pieces of evidence pointing to her important place on the show. Aria makes fans wonder enough times if she knows more than she's letting on, and that counts for something.

9 Her Dad's Affair Is A Focal Point Of Season 1

There are many wild and dramatic season 1 storylines on PLL. Fans remember when Aria discovers that her dad, Byron, is having an affair with Meredith. This is a huge deal and tears the whole family apart.

Byron's decision to cheat plays a large part in the first season of the show, and this makes Aria seem like the main character since her family life is much juicier and more entertaining to watch than her friends'.

8 Her Relationship With Ezra Lasts Almost All Seven Seasons

While it's problematic that Ezra is interested in high school student Aria, it's hard to imagine this popular teen drama without this particular love story. By the series finale, the two are married and going to look into adopting a baby, and it's a more age-appropriate romance since Aria is an adult.

Because this relationship lasts for most of the series, that is another reason to see Aria as the main character. If she and Ezra had decided to stay apart in season 1 and never looked back, that would be different, but their love story seems longer than any other liars' since Hanna and Caleb and Spencer and Toby spent a lot of time apart.

7 She Has Storylines That Don't Involve Ali

Aria enjoys traveling and in the first season of Pretty Little Liars, she and her family have returned from Iceland.

While Aria never forgets that Ali has gone missing, it's fair to say that she copes better than the other liars do. She's able to move to another place and have some real experiences there, and she isn't as obsessed with finding out what happened as Emily, Hanna, and Spencer are, at least not in the pilot. Because Aria seems like she can put this tragic part of her past behind her, that suggests she could be the main character, as she has a lot of exciting storylines that don't have anything to do with Ali.

6 She Joins The A.D. Team

In the seventh season episode "In The Eye Abides the Heart," Aria becomes part of the A.D. Team. Of course, she would never have willingly made that decision, but the other choice was to let Ezra go to jail, and she isn't about to let that happen.

Since Aria is so close to the action, this makes her a great main character. The others are tormented by A for so long and they get horrible text messages and have near-death experiences, but Aria actually becomes part of this story.

5 She's Involved In A Mystery Later On The Series

Aria doesn't love learning that Ezra fell for a woman named Nicole and that they were really serious about each other. Nicole disappears in South America, which puts Aria at the center of another big mystery.

Nicole does come back, which is a problem for Aria since she loves Ezra and wants to be with him. The fact that Aria is part of a big, important and fascinating mystery that isn't about Ali points to her being the main character.

4 Learning Ezra Is On The A-Team Is One Of The Biggest Twists

While Ezra being a potential A isn't a great plot twist, since it doesn't end up being true and he has a legitimate reason for helping out, it's still a huge crisis for Aria.

Pretty Little Liars is all about twists and turns that viewers didn't see coming. This cements Aria as the protagonist as fans get to see how she reacts to this information and how it changes her life.

3 She Has Strong Ties To Rosewood

The main characters on Pretty Little Liars all plan to leave Rosewood once high school is over. They've definitely suffered enough and experienced enough trauma and pain.

If anyone was going to stay in this small town, though, it seems like it would be Aria. She seems to have had a really happy childhood here, and her family loves it so much that they return after relocating to Iceland for a while. Since this is the show's main setting, it suggests that Aria has a very important place in the teen drama.

2 She Becomes A Famous Writer, Which Completes Her Arc

From the start of the show, Aria is creative and is on the path to write a book or become an English teacher. She and Ezra share a love of books and language.

Aria becomes a famous writer by the end of the series, as she and Ezra wrote a book that interested Hollywood, too. This completes Aria's character arc and makes it feel like she has come full circle from a teenage girl struggling to be happy to a grown adult who has achieved her dreams.

1 Her Fertility Issues Are Relatable

The main characters live happily ever after and the series finale of Pretty Little Liars shows Aria and Ezra on the journey to becoming parents.

Aria tells Ezra that she can't have biological children, and this conversation is a relatable one, which is another reason why she's the main character of the show. Aria proves that everyone goes through a lot but can end up exactly where they need to be.
