Zack Synder's Army Of The Dead: 10 Details We Learned From The Trailer
The first teaser for Zach Snyder's zombie heist movie, Army Of The Dead, may be brief and light on details but it still gives fans a taste of what to expect. Lots of action and gore are on display in the minute-long teaser, but there are some shots that do offer some extra details about the movie.
Director Zack Snyder made a name for himself in Hollywood with his remake of Dawn Of The Dead, and he might even be referencing that movie in his new one. It might not be the only Snyder movie the teaser makes a sly allusion to, either.
10 The Heist
The general plot of the movie, which is a heist set during a zombie outbreak, has been known for a while. The teaser cements the premise, though. In a few brief shots, the viewers see a group of people entering a huge vault. Given the other contextual clues in the teaser, it appears that the vault is, presumably, inside a casino in Las Vegas and it's full of money. The plot recalls the Ocean's 11 movies, but getting into the vault might not be as complicated as it was in those movies.
9 Soldiers?
The protagonists of the movie, or at least the crew involved in the heist, are an interesting group, to say the least. Most of them decked are out in military gear, suggesting they might be soldiers. They also appear to be operating an army issue helicopter at one point. Soldiers cutting out during a zombie apocalypse to rob a casino isn't a good look, but it's not cut and dried. None of them appear to have insignia or other identifiers and many of them are in civilian clothing.
8 Getting Out Is Not Easy
Getting into the casino vault might be relatively easy for the team, compared to some of the best heist movies of all time. But getting definitely won't be. Numerous shots in the teaser show hordes of zombies converging on the Las Vegas strip. The teaser also shows the helicopter plunging off the roof of the casino in a fashion that doesn't suggest a good outcome. That's supported by shots of an RV or other large vehicle trying to motor through the mass of zombies in the streets later in the teaser.
7 Suicide Squad
The basic plot of the movie may actually be spelled out in the teaser. The team gets into the vault, but then things go sideways. Their original plan to fly out on the helicopter is scuttled and they have to find an exit strategy on the ground. That turns them into a literal and figurative suicide squad.
Zack Snyder is bringing in an element of the DC Suicide Squad to the Justice League: The Snyder Cut, in the form of the Joker. In Army Of The Dead, he might be having a little fun with the idea of a small group of doomed characters fighting their way through a devastated city against an undead army.
6 Homages
The teaser displays a lot of zombie carnage, but also a couple of neat movie homages. One is to the classic Vietnam War movie Apocalypse Now. The helicopter flies into a bright, gauzy sunrise very similar to a scene in the Francis Ford Coppola movie. There is also a potential nod to Snyder's own Dawn Of The Dead. In the teaser, the team attempts to escape in some kind of vehicle through the zombie horde. In Dawn Of The Dead, zombies also surrounded a fortified ground vehicle as the heroes tried to escape.
5 Might Take Place During The Outbreak
The timeline of the movie isn't super clear. The teaser actually raises some more questions. Does it take place during the zombie outbreak, or after? There are several shots of people being chased through the casinos and streets. However, audiences are still uncertain about whether the disaster occurs either at the beginning of the movie or in flashbacks. It's possible that the robbers thought they were going into a less complicated situation, and something happens to draw even more zombies to the scene.
4 Fast Zombies
One thing that is clear in the movie is that these zombies are fast. Ever since the unconventional zombie movie 28 Days Later, zombies have generally been much faster than the early horror movie antecedents. The zombies in Army of The Dead are seen to be sprinting through the streets and the gaming floor of the casino. They are overwhelming in numbers and in speed, which is likely upset whatever the original plan of the heist crew is.
3 Utter Devastation
The descent into chaos is fast, too. Several shots in the teaser establish the devastation the zombies had wrought in Las Vegas. It goes far beyond just human carnage. Numerous buildings feature structural damage, which may be the result of an armed attempt to stop the zombie tide.
It could actually be that the army or police (or both) are fighting the zombies while the heist crew is trying to rob the vault. A conflict between them could escalate things out of control.
2 Diverse Cast
The diverse cast of the movie has been known for a while, but the teaser puts them on glorious display. Dave Bautista seems to be the leader of the crew, continuing his run as a big action star. Backing him up is Ella Purnell, Ana de la Reguera, Garret Dillahunt, Raúl Castillo, Omari Hardwick, Tig Notaro, Nora Arnezeder, and Matthias Schweighöfer.
1 Snyder Cut Easter Egg
Army Of The Dead has a great Easter egg which appears to be a nod to another major Zack Snyder 2021 film. Inside the vault, there are a group of five hexagonal canisters which movie buffs will recognize as movie cans. Zack Snyder famously showed his proof that The Snyder Cut does exist by showing film cans containing the movie on his Vero account.
This blink-and-you'll-miss-it bit in the vault might be his way of acknowledging the situation. When Army Of The Dead started filming in July 2019, Justice League: The Snyder Cut didn't seem like it would ever be seen.
