10 Questionable Life Choices In Better Call Saul | ScreenRant

The characters from Better Call Saul are lawyers, criminals, and sometimes, both. In the span of the show's 5 seasons, they all had to make some difficult decisions that put them on a completely different path in life. At some point, a lot of them found themselves in a position where they weren't in charge of those decisions anymore, though. Saul, for example, didn't really have a choice but to become the so-called 'friend of the cartel'.

In "Bad Choice Road", Mike gave Saul a speech about the nature of making life decisions: "We all make our choices and those choices, they put us on a road. Sometimes, those choices seem small, but they put you on a road. You think about getting off, but eventually, you're back on it." In the world of Better Call Saul, most characters took the bad choice road at some point and they all paid a price for it.

10 Mike's Decision To Help Nacho Take Out Tuco

Nacho came to Mike, asking for his help. He wanted Mike to murder Tuco, but Mike agreed to help him get arrested instead. Mike was a highly skilled hitman, but still, he had no idea who he was setting himself up against. With Tuco gone, he had to deal with Hector - a man who had no problem killing innocent civilians, like the Good Samaritan he had killed in "Nailed".

To say that going up against the cartel would be considered a poor life choice is a huge understatement. It's a stalemate; whatever one does, there is sure to be more suffering as a consequence of their (in)actions.

9 Nacho Went To Jimmy To Talk About The Kettlemans

Knowing Jimmy is afraid of him, Nacho paid the lawyer a visit in order to discuss the Kettlemans and their hidden millions. He made a huge mistake by thinking that Jimmy would keep his mouth shut. Worried for the lives of the Kettleman family, Jimmy called and warned them. The police came and arrested Nacho who was surveilling their house in a suspicious-looking white van.

By going to Jimmy and taking it upon herself to steal millions from the Kettlemans, Nacho unnecessarily exposed himself to the police, which in the world of Better Call Saul, is one of the worst things that can happen to you.

8 Jimmy & Kim Both Quit Decent Jobs

Kim had a promising career ahead of herself at HHM. She started in the mailroom and was an attorney by her early thirties. Hamlin and Chuck didn't treat her the way she deserved, but the firm's competitors were more than happy to snatch her away from HHM. Kim didn't want that life, though.

She quit HHM to start her own practice and later on, left Schweikart & Cokely, even though she was well-respected in the firm. Similarly, Jimmy found a way out of working for Davis & Main, even though he was finally financially secure, possibly for the first time in his life. Leaving a great job is always a gamble and sometimes, it turns out to be a huge mistake.

7 Werner Moved To The States For A Job He Couldn't Finish

If there's anything to learn from Werner Ziegler's story, it's that one should think twice before packing their bags and moving to another country for the foreseeable future. Especially if there's a family waiting at home.

Considering he was a German engineer, Werner probably had a well-paid job in Germany, so he could have easily passed on this difficult and extremely secretive job. Working with Fring was a life choice that cost him his life.

6 Nacho Got Greedy & Underestimated Pryce's Stupidity

One of the life lessons to be learned from Nacho is that it's best not to be greedy in life. Nacho was making a good amount of money by selling Pryce's pills, yet saw an opportunity to rip the man off even further simply because he was a non-threatening amateur.

Nacho's greed got him in quite a lot of trouble. Pryce was stupid enough to call the police, which was something Nacho didn't anticipate. If it wasn't for Mike's interfering, this simple act of theft would have gotten Nacho and Pryce in a lot of trouble. Pryce suffered a lot of humiliation for calling the police after being robbed, but ultimately, he got off easy.

5 Chuck Refused To Mend The Relationship With Own His Brother

Chuck was frustrated with Jimmy. His younger brother was always more likable, popular, and charming than him. And even though Chuck sabotaged Jimmy's life by refusing to hire him at HHM, for example, it's not just Jimmy who suffered. Chuck suffered too.

He was the one who had to carry all that resentment, pain, and anger without ever addressing it, which is definitely a really bad life choice that dramatically affects one's mental health.

4 Marrying For Spousal Testimonial Privilege

Kim and Jimmy were kind of perfect for each other. In their books, it made sense that they should get married for spousal testimonial privilege. They didn't stop to consider that perhaps, it's better they go their separate ways, since their relationship is fueled by thrill-seeking behaviors.

When they're not bonding over conning someone, they don't really have that much chemistry, as seen in the 'Something Stupid' sequence. Kim and Jimmy are both emotionally unavailable people who have mistaken excitement for intimacy. Getting married was a bad idea because it wasn't grounded on genuine love or trust.

3 Jimmy Acted On His Emotions

Jimmy was the master of scheming. He was the master who pulled the strings as he had a good understanding of how people react under certain circumstances. Unfortunately, he failed to see when Chuck was doing the very same thing to him. After Chuck recorded Jimmy's confession of tampering with Mesa Verde documents, he wanted Jimmy to find out what he had done, knowing well that his enraged brother would come after him.

Acting when upset is never a good idea. When people are consumed by their emotions, they cannot think straight and thus make bad decisions. The same goes for guilt. If Chuck didn't make Jimmy feel guilty, Jimmy wouldn't have confessed in the first place.

2 Howard's Unquestionable Loyalty To Chuck

Loyalty is a great virtue to have in life. Howard Hamlin was loyal to a fault, though. Whatever Chuck wanted, he complied, even if it wasn't something he'd do himself. He told Jimmy he can't work for HHM on Chuck's orders, even though Howard thought Jimmy was a good worker. He even came up with a nickname for him, Charlie Hustle. But the respect and admiration he had for Chuck were larger still.

Letting Chuck run the show snowballed into HHM losing its stellar reputation, which left Howard feeling completely lost. Luckily, he got back on his feet in season 5, but it seems like he has Jimmy and Kim to look out for in the upcoming season.

1 Kim Grew Addicted To Risky Behavior

Kim grew up in difficult circumstances that left a permanent mark on her: she's drawn to toxic relationships and feels truly alive when she's engaging in risky behavior. As one of the smartest characters on Better Call Saul, she is also self-aware enough to know just how much risk she can afford to take - but that's changing fast.

In "Cobbler", she was outraged when Jimmy falsified evidence for Daniel - not because it was immoral, but because he put himself on the line. Fast-forward to season 5, and she's faked an entire campaign for Huell and is currently planning to take down Howard. It looks like Kim grew addicted to playing dangerous games. Consequences will be coming her way. In the Breaking Bad/Better Call Saul universe, they always do.
