Batman V Superman: The Main Characters' First And Last Lines

With the release of Zack Snyder's Justice League, now is the perfect opportunity to revisit some of Snyder's other DCEU movies. While Man of Steel started off the epic journey, Batman V Superman really showed what Snyder was envisioning for the larger DC story.

Looking back on the movie, it is fascinating to see how Snyder and his team dealt with various iconic characters and their arcs. The dialogue of these main characters is particularly telling as it helps show how Snyder's vision differs from other versions of the character while also planting the seeds for how their stories would continue in Justice League.

10 Anatoli Knynazev

"CIA." - "Believe me, I'll do it."

The villainous henchman Anatoli Knynazev is introduced searching Jimmy Olsen's phone and finding a tracking device, suggesting Jimmy is CIA. When Batman shows up to save Martha Kent, Anatoli threatens to burn her with a flamethrower.

Both of these lines show that this man is a hardcore bad guy. The cold way he discovers Jimmy's identity is intimidating and his brutal threats of murdering Martha are quite shocking.

9 Senator Finch

"The world has been so caught up with what Superman can do, that no one has asked what he should do." - "Oh my God."

After a controversial rescue overseas, Senator Finch holds hearings questioning whether Superman really is the hero the world has made him out to be. When Superman shows up at the hearings, Finch realizes that Lex Luthor has set her up and detonates a bomb inside the room.

With her first line, Finch introduces the idea of a world that sees Superman in a more complicated way than other versions. Her final line has her realizing she should never have trusted Luthor just as she is too late.

8 Perry White

"Kent, you're sports today." - "Stay calm, everybody."

As the head editor of the Daily Planet, Perry White assigns Clark Kent to a sports story. During Doomsday's attack in Metropolis, Perry helps to guide everyone in the building to safety when things start to look dangerous.

Both of these lines show Perry as an authority figure, which Laurence Fishburne plays so effectively. He throws out an assignment on the fly in the midst of the busy newsroom, but when his employees are in danger, he is the calm leader.

7 Martha Kent

"People hate what they don't understand." - "Clark had this sent here so he could surprise you."

When the public opinion starts to turn against him, Clark visits his mother who explains people's reaction to Superman is just human nature. Following Clark's death, Martha gives Lois the engagement ring Clark had been planning on giving to her.

Just as with Man of Steel, Martha remains a loving voice of reason whenever he needs her. She speaks to the bond between Lois and Clark that is so important for Snyder's trilogy.

6 Alfred

"Master Wayne!" - "It would in theory."

In a flashback, Alfred calls out to young Bruce Wayne when he runs away from the funeral for his parents. While fighting Doomsday, Alfred communicates over the radio with Batman, agreeing the Kryptonia spear might defeat the alien beast.

Alfred's first line shows that he was always there for Bruce, looking out for him and worrying about him ever since he was a child. His last line has him as that ever-present voice helping Bruce in his battles.

5 Lois Lane

"Are you a terrorist, general?" - "No, please Clark!"

When Lois arrives to interview a dangerous general, she starts by asking him a tough and blunt question. When Clark decides to sacrifice himself to defeat Doomsday, Lois begs him not to do it.

Snyder's version of Lois Lane is a much tougher version of the character and her first line, challenging this dangerous man, is a good indication of that. Her final line is another glimpse at how much Clark means to Lois and vice versa, and how his death would ultimately affect her.

4 Lex Luthor

"A hoi hoi." - "He's found us. And he's coming! Ding, ding, ding."

When Senator Finch and other politicians come to pay Lex Luthor a visit, he greets them in a very bizarre way. After Batman visits Lex in prison, Lex warns him that some unknown threat is coming and the "bells have been rung."

The awkward greeting is a way of establishing this very different take on Lex Luthor as a socially awkward young man. His final line is an ominous teaser for the coming threat of Darkseid which Snyder would, of course, explore in Justice League.

3 Diana Prince / Wonder Woman

"Yes." - "The others like me… Why did you say they'll have to fight?"

As someone examines a rare artifact at an exhibit and remarks on its magnificence, Diana Prince agrees. At Superman's funeral, Diana questions Bruce about his mission to find other meta-humans and why he thinks they will need to fight.

Though not a particularly memorable first line for Gal Gadot, Diana's admiration of the artifact hints that she knows more about its past than the average person. Her final line is another tease to the future, the coming threats, and the new heroes who will be introduced.

2 Clark Kent / Superman

"Hey." - "You are my world."

Clark returns to his apartment early in the movie and greets Lois. When Clark sees that he will need to sacrifice himself to defeat Doomsday, he explains to Lois that it came from his world but that she is his world now.

Both of these lines speak to the connection between Clark and Lois that had just begun in Man of Steel. After feeling like an outsider, Clark made a home with Lois and his final line confirms that she is his most important connection to Earth that he is willing to give up because that is the hero he is.

1 Bruce Wayne / Batman

"There was a time above. A time before…" - "Whatever you do. Wherever you go. I'll be watching."

In his opening narration, Bruce explains the time before the world changed with the arrival of Superman. When visiting Lex in prison, Batman warns him that he will be watching him for whatever threats are to come.

The opening narration introduces a more cynical and darker Bruce Wayne while establishing his hatred for Superman. His final line seems to suggest he knows Luther's plans are not over and that he will be ready for what is to come next.
