Deadpool & X-Men Ally Domino Reveals Her Powers Kill Innocent People
Warning: spoilers for Marvel Voices: Legacy #1 ahead!
As fans of both comics and Deadpool 2 know, Domino, a frequent ally of both Deadpool and the X-Men, has the power to manipulate luck, and while this power seems to work just fine for her, she has revealed that it has led to the death of many innocent people over the years. In "Good Luck Girl" - from Tochi Onyebuchi, Ken Lashley, and Juan Fernandez - in Marvel Voices: Legacy #1, Domino is on a mission to win a high-stakes poker game, planning to use the money to right a wrong brought about by her powers.
A gun for hire who has worked extensively with X-Force and especially the mutant hero Cable, Domino’s powers allow her to telekinetically alter probability in her favor, to the point where it appears she is extremely lucky. Unfortunately, Domino’s good luck means someone else suffers to compensate, and readers learn that sometimes those who suffer the most are innocent bystanders.
Watching the suffering of innocents has taken its toll on Domino. When the story opens, she is in an extremely high-stakes game of poker in Madripoor, and through flashbacks, Domino reveals why she is in the game: she wishes to win the jackpot, which she will then give to the father of a young girl who was killed during one of Domino’ missions, with the implication her luck-based powers were responsible. Trouble follows Domino wherever she tends to go, and a fight breaks out at the game. After fighting off the goons, using her probability-altering powers, she is ultimately successful in obtaining the money, which she passes on to the father, allowing him to at least keep his home.
During the course of the game, one of the players, familiar with Domino’s powers, comments on the tendency for innocent people near her to die, speculating that Domino is playing the game out of remorse - and he is right. He also notes that Domino’s guilt leads her into high-risk situations. Her powers have made her one of the most formidable mercenaries in the world, but the dark and disturbing downside they come with has put a strain on Domino, forcing her into situations where she will be forced to further use her powers - and potentially cause more innocents to die. It's a detail that makes Domino a much more complex character - someone with one of the most enviable power in comics, and yet also a hero who knows that every time she fights the good fight, innocents might die.
The recent Cable #8 explored the chaotic (and often disgusting) nature of Domino’s luck-based powers, showing that Marvel is acknowledging that while the powers can be handy, they come with a price. It's a classic case of Marvel's overriding theme of great power coming with great responsibility, and yet in Domino's case, with the added wrinkle that she has no real way of knowing the consequences of her actions. Thankfully, the mixture of chaotic potential and dark consequences ensure that Domino will continue to be one of Deadpool and the X-Men's most exciting allies for years to come.
