Generation Cast & Character Guide: Where You Know The Actors From
Generation aims to tell the story of the current generation of teens in a dark and grounded way, invoking the voice of HBO's hit teen drama Euphoria, as well as fellow HBO series I May Destroy You or the BBC's It's a Sin. But unlike the Zendaya-led series, Generation was created by 19-year-old Zelda Barnz and her father Daniel Barnz. Here's a look at the cast and characters who have brought the father-daughter team's vision to life.
Generation follows a group of high school students exploring their sexuality in their conservative community, a theme also explored in '80s-set BBC drama It's A Sin earlier this year. The show delves into their beliefs about life, love, and family in their society, finding both the comedy and the tragedy inherent in living. The HBO Max show is brought to life by a great ensemble cast, giving equal time to the stories of each of the teens and making for a well-balanced depiction of modern teen life. This isn't to say the stories are disparate, though, as the characters are brought together by the fact that many of them are members of the school's gay-straight alliance club.
The Generation cast is comprised of a mix of familiar faces and newcomers. The show is also produced by another notable HBO alum — Lena Dunham. Here's a breakdown of everyone in Generation.
Right off the bat, Ariana falls for Nathan, one of the supporting characters of the show. She comes from a queer home, as she's raised by two dads. This allows the character's story to fit into the spectrum of sexuality that Generation explores. Alexander previously appeared in Ocean's Eight as the little sister to Rihanna's character Nine Ball.
Naomi is Nathan's sister. She is initially completely consumed by her relationship with her boyfriend Jack. But once Nathan comes out as bisexual, she dedicates herself to becoming a well-informed ally, especially against their homophobic mother. East previously appeared in Kevin (Probably) Saves the World and The Wolf of Snow Hollow.
Haley Sanchez appears in the HBO Max show as the shy Greta. She has a crush on another girl at school named Riley, but has a hard time navigating the line between platonic friendship and something more. Generation is Sanchez's first big role, as her only other acting credit is in the short Redress.
Ana is Greta's aunt. She fiercely supports her niece, giving her the confidence she needs to find herself. Generation is Mau's first major television role, as she's only previously appeared in a handful of shorts before.
Delilah is another student at the school. Her story in Generation kicks off on an unexpected note as she gives birth to a baby in a mall bathroom. Her friends Naomi and Ariana were by her side as it all happened. Maxwell previously appeared in the TV show speechless.
Chase Sui Wonders as Riley — Riley is an outspoken member of the GSA club. Within the first few episodes of Generation, it's unclear if she feels the same way about Greta. Wonders can also be seen in On the Rocks alongside Bill Murray and Rashida Jones.
Uly Schlesinger as Nathan — Generation sees Nathan struggling with his journey of coming out as bisexual. As Teen Vogue writes, Nathan's storyline follows the struggle of a recently-out bisexual person wondering if their new sexuality is just code for gay. Schlesinger has previously appeared in The Divorce and The Sinner.
Justice Smith as Chester — Gay student Chester constantly blurs the line between female and male stereotypes. As a star water polo player, he fulfills the traditional male high school jock cliché. But he also tends to wear more feminine clothing that constantly break dress code rules. He is unapologetically himself, making him a modern-day genderfluid, queer teen in Generation. Audiences may recognize Smith from roles in Netflix's The Get Down and Detective Pikachu, where he starred alongside Ryan Reynolds and Kathryn Newton.
