WandaVision's Finale Setup Agatha Harkness' MCU Return (But Not As A Villain)
Agatha Harkness is nowhere near being done in the MCU after the events of the WandaVision finale. One of the big arcs of Marvel Studios' first Disney+ original series was Wanda Maximoff coming to terms with her role as the Scarlet Witch. After discovering that her powers are fueled through chaos magic, Elizabeth Olsen's character embraced it, and by the final episode, fully took on her destined title. Agatha Harkness, the primary antagonist for WandaVision season 1, was defeated — but Kathryn Hahn's time portraying the character within the MCU isn't over by any means.
The final moment between Wanda and Agatha hints that fans have not seen the last of the long-lived witch. Agatha, who insists that the Scarlet Witch is a destroyer of worlds, gets a different punishment from the heroine than typical incarceration (or death): instead of killing Agatha or even letting her go, Wanda decided to trap the villain in Westview, New Jersey, by locking her mind away inside the Agnes persona that was created for the "TV show" WandaVision.
Before she receives her punishment, Agatha pleads with Scarlet Witch to spare her — effectively setting up her MCU return. Not only does Agatha stress to Wanda that she has no idea what she's unleashed, but that one day Wanda will need her. Wanda assures Agatha that if she ever needs her, it won't be hard to find her. The exchange is brief, but heavily implies that a reunion between the two is inevitable. However, based on that final scene in WandaVision, the MCU is looking to go in a new direction that is similar to Wanda and Agatha's dynamic in the comics.
While Wanda is getting more powerful after the events of WandaVision, so too will her future obstacles as her arc progresses in the MCU. As the Scarlet Witch, Wanda still has a lot more to learn about her powers, and that could be how the MCU evolves Agatha from villain to ally. In the comic books, Agatha was actually Wanda's mentor who tutored her in magic. For the MCU to introduce her as a villain, only to leave her future ambiguous, suggests that Agatha's next chapter in her character arc likely involves a redemption story. Even as rivals, Olsen and Hahn had fascinating chemistry, and seeing them evolve into allies would be a compelling journey to watch.
The first three MCU phases have redeemed several villains into more heroic roles. There's no reason why the MCU couldn't do the same with Agatha, especially after the incredible reception the character got through WandaVision. It would be a waste of Hahn's talent to continue having Agatha in the same role when she could become one of the most complex characters in the MCU. While Agatha could take on the mentor role for Wanda in a future Marvel film or show, it'd add some intriguing struggle to see her fighting between the good and dark side. Whatever Agatha Harkness's role ends up being in the future, WandaVision is definitely not the last time fans will Kathryn Hahn in the role.
